[MOD] Motion Sickness fix
A decent chunk of people have issues with motion sickness due to the backgrounds. This has been discussed since long before release but no change has been made, so for now this mod is going to have to suffice.

Please note, if your main issue is stuff moving when you move your mouse, there's a setting for that: Options > Game > Screen Shake. Set it to zero, no more moving UI. Disabling the DRT effect may help in some cases as well. This mod is purely for people who can't handle the swirly backgrounds.

HOW TO INSTALL:
The download below is a zip file. The game itself is also a zip file, pretty much. You're going to need an archive program like 7-zip (winrar apparently doesn't work?) to open both.
Opening the zip file should be self explanatory, for the game you have to right click Balatro.exe and look for "Open as" and use your program of choice. Both should contain a "resources" folder. To find Balatro.exe, right click Balatro in your steam library and select Manage > browse local files. You may have file extensions hidden so it just shows up as Balatro.
Just pick which version you want to install, and drag the resources folder from the mod into the other window, not onto a specific other folder, and let go to copy. If it asks you to overwrite files, say yes. It's only two files.
Then close the archive program, boot up the game, and you should be fine!

WHAT DOES IT DO?
For the main menu, it just stops the motion. I feel the swirl is too iconic to remove, and you don't spend much time there anyway. I'd show you a screenshot, but it would look the same as if you took a screenshot of the vanilla menu.

For the game itself, I have two versions:
-One with circles, changing in shape so there's still some visual flair
https://steamcommunity.com/id/the_goblinguy/screenshot/5991546899200438642/

-One with just a solid color. Zero motion for zero sickness

CAN I TRUST YOU?
There's effectively two files here, shader files with the .fs extension. You can open them up in any text editor and see what they do, or compare them to the ones in the original game. There's very few changes, I hope LocalThunk doesn't hate me for distributing effectively the same code with minimal changes.

Also, if you do use this, please consider turning off error reporting in options, so LocalThunk doesn't get potentially spammed with errors that have nothing to do with the actual base game. Pretty sure error reporting was removed.

strangely when opening belatro.exe with winrar and then dragging your resource folder to it gives me the message that the archive is corrupt.

that is the belatro exe archive itself is corrupt cause it happens even when dragging a random text file to it

Hmm, odd. I don't have winrar myself (I'm on linux, it's not even an option) but I assumed it should work the same. Consider trying 7-zip, I'm fairly sure that should work just fine, including the windows version.

I would suggest a different fix without installing anything

go to option 3rd category and reduce that "VHS" or smh setting to 0, it helps so much

ereasing the "VHS" effect (its like how old monitors looked, the screen was quite rounded with edges not being pure sqaure and straight bars coming from entirty on it, just uncheck the option quickly and you'sell the difference at once, its set at 50 normally

Not for people who got sick by the backgrounds themselves, sadly.

ah i thought you were refering to something in the files lol, but yeah i got the crt scanlines set to 0

This should have been an in-game setting by now. Thanks.
Skysagi Feb 25, 2024 @ 11:24am
I'm surpised this isn't an in-game option. I watched Lirik playing it and in spite of how interesting the game looks the background just threw me off.

The solid color is great for preventing motion sickness, thanks! Don't suppose there's any way to make the color a little less bright as well?

It uses the first color of the three that are normally mixed in the background, which I assumed was the darkest one for all blinds. I admittedly didn't extensively test the solid color one so maybe on some bosses it uses a bright one... Any specific blind you had this issue on, or do you just think it's too bright in general? Making a quick edited version where it mixes in a lot of black should be easy enough.
