Sorry, I don't understand the game
Hey all! I love roguelikes, and games like slay the spire. Is this similar to that or is it just poker with modifiers? I don't know anything about poker, sadly, so I'm afraid I'll be a bit lost lol!

Thank you and hope you're all enjoying the game!

It's considerably closer to a roguelite like Slay the Spire than to poker. It is literally impossible to progress past more than the first few rounds by playing "just poker", you have to start messing with the rules to survive.

Yeah, it's like a poker 'setting' for a roguelite, really. Poker strategy doesn't really come into play at all - if you know the hands (and the game shows them to you), you know to sort of play for those and try to tilt the odds in your favor.

It really only requires you to know the hand rankings (including some new ones that are possible with the way the deck building works in this, both of which are covered in-game). There is almost 0 poker strategy required, though knowing a small amount about odds of hitting straights/flushes etc based on remaining outs is mildly useful.

That said, the UI is terrific and all the information is available mid-hand so even if you don't know those kinds of things by heart, the info is right there for you. Would highly recommend. Please do not feel intimidated by the fact you don't know poker, you will pick it up very quickly I'm sure. The deck building aspects of the game are much more important/complex than the actual poker knowledge required. Good luck if you decide to pick it up.

FWIW, I haven't played "Slay the Spire" or any other rroguelike/lite for that matter but am told by friends this is similar and I'm having an absolute blast with it!

If you like slay the spire and understand how that works you should have no problem with this game, the only element of poker the game has is you are playing with a deck of actual cards and you select a hand to play in each ''battle''.... so for example you may choose to play a pair which would be 2 cards of the same number. The game shows you what hands you can play and what makes up those hands, so if you dont know what a ''full house'' is in poker the game shows that to you with the press of a button.

Thats really it as far as the poker goes and you dont need to be good at poker itself because the game takes poker and turns it completely on its head with 150 joker cards that add modifications to the hand you play, for example you may play a ''pair'' and you may have a joker card that adds a 3x multiplier to that, so if the hand is worth 20 points it may multiply that by 3 thanks to the joker card you have. You can hold 5 different joker cards at any one time which all add different abilities to the hands you play so the variation on multipliers and other special effects is wild.

honestly its an amazing game, it sinks hooks in and does not let go like the best out there.

How do you work that out? I have 100 hours in and have a lot of challenges to complete.

You just have to learn the basic poker hands
I knew nothing about poker before and after about 2 hours of playing I was able to recognize all the hands and get to ante 6. Not knowing how to play poker may have helped me learn and not try to assume things that are normally true in poker.

I think most people can learn this game given enough time and tolerance to losing a lot at first. Same with all rouge lites.

Most players take more than 5 hours to their first win, I think, though winning within the first 1-2 hours is certainly possible, and the game isn't done with on your first win.

Per-run, it's much less than 5 hours.

This is nonsensical.

I have nearly 300 hours, have completed every achievement including completionest++, and have a decent win rate on gold stake. Still don’t know how to actually play poker.
