Shame about the graphics

Game looks fun, and I'll probably buy it, but I wish they had made even a little bit of effort on the graphics. The pixel, jaggies look kind of makes the game annoying to look at for a long period of time. I am not saying you need Alan Wake 2 level of graphics in a game of this type, but most, say, games like deck builders, even the ones put out by small, independent studios can manage nice looking cards. (I just looked up a little $2.99 game called "Puzzle Poker"on Steam to give an example. It would have been nice to have graphics of this level in Balatro. Shouldn't have been that hard.)

I think the menus need work but I love the overall style. It's clearly very reminiscent of Earthbound. Compare it to something like https://store.steampowered.com/app/2400510/Dungeons__Degenerate_Gamblers/ Balatro has waay more of a stylistic identity. You definitely have to turn down the crt and screen shake effect though (like 20% is good) and keep smooth pixels on in the settings.

i could not disagree more. this game honestly has such an incredibly strong sense of style and strong art direction, it is one of my favourite looking games i've played in a long time.

I mean, one guy made the game so it's sort of hard to expect cutting edge visuals. I think the stylistic tone of the game is fantastic. It looks and sounds really nice.

I updated my OP with a suggestion to look up a little indie game called "Puzzle Poker" on Steam. That would have been a perfectly fine level of graphics. That's not asking much.

I'm sorry, but the design of the game is incredible. It's clearly meant to resemble old video-poker machines. I think the real shame would be to change its charming and interesting style to make a realistic poker table with modeled cards instead.

I like graphics, minimalistic and simple style that feels like old card games. Also this CRT visual effect reminds me good old times. Gameplay is more important than shiny pixels and gameplay in this game is amazing.

Suggesting that Puzzle Poker looks better than Balatro is even more insane than saying Balatro's graphics are bad in the first place. PLEASE let this be a troll post.

I adore the style except the CRT filter (nostalgic but ugly/headache inducing), which you can turn off.

I agree the game could use more clarity to represent cards and other important mechanics but to say it has "bad graphics" is crazy. It's like people that say Elden Ring "looks bad", I just can't possibly fathom what they're talking about

Oof yeah, definitely don't like the visuals of puzzle poker. Looks like a bargain bin 2007 game. I'm sure it's fun though.

i think this is one of those "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" situations. i took a look at Puzzle Poker and it looks much, much worse to me. to each their own i guess.

So we are in agreement, in that we both think the game could look better. I actually like the graphics of Elden Ring, and I like the graphics of DREDGE, but I passed on Dave the Diver because they didn't even try on the graphics. As I said, I will probably buy and enjoy this game, but I simply would have liked the game to look "a bit" nicer. Should have known that this would drive fan bois wild.
