IDK what the consensus is on spoilers for a game like this, but consider this a warning i guess that i'll be talking about unlockables below.
There's a deck that gives you just hearts and spades, that makes royal straights inherently more practical and valuable than a default deck. Getting that combined with the any straight synergy jokers + flush jokers + all of a suit Jokers with mult and retriggers on face cards and you get way better numbers than you'd get with just regular straights.
Conversely, you might find synergies with, for example, Ancient Joker that changes bonus hand types per round or "If played hand contains X,Y,Z that favor regular straights instead.
It also adds more potential for run variations which is the lifeblood of roguelites.
So if you are playing straights and never upgraded the straight flush level, then yes, a Royal Flush will be level 1.
The game counts the hand that is closest to the top on the hand value chart. Not the hand that is worth more points or at a higher level.
Get your straight flush to level 8, the Royal Flush will be level 8 too.
