I've won 3 runs so far, with 22 hours played in total, and currently 56% of items unlocked. It took me some 15 hours until I first beat the game.
The game is not RNG based. You can easily mitigate bad RNG by rerolling the Shop for Jokers, as long as you're smart enough to not spend every cent the second you win it, instead of leveraging interest.
The first Ante can easily be beaten with 0 Jokers. Maybe when you're trying to reach Ante 11+ which requires millions of chips it's a different matter, but beating the game (Ante 8) I've managed to do increasingly more frequently once everything clicked, and hitting certain Jokers had nothing to do with it.
You still need luck though to get them. Especially with spending your money on packs.
Then there is the obvious drawing of cards luck, which is only mitigated by having a powerful combination of jokers, planets etc,
A few antes is almost always possible. But after that you need a good combo of extras for which you need luck to obtain.
I don't think this is a particularly bad thing though. It just depends on what you expect of the game I guess.
Challenges on the other hand, requires a much higher amount of luck to beat, some super tough ones like Jokerless will destroy you given a bad RNG roll and you can't do anything about it. Get wrecked by powerful boss in early ante, built a super strong deck only to have Verdant Leaf greet you at the end, etc... can be brutal. I can't really blame anyone for ragequit at this point since you did literally everything in your power only for the game to say "screw you Imma cheat too".
this is the most reasonable take for sure. there is definitely some luck involved of course, and it increases quite a bit depending on the stake or challenge, but there is also a ton of applied knowledge that makes a tremendous difference in how likely I can get a win.
Once again I had a good run, decent jokers...but then one blind comes up and REFUSED to give me the cards I need to win. Wasted all discards, even wasted hands as discards and the game is like "lol nope". It's luck. lol
I've not won a run on the PC version of the game yet, but have been enjoying the game so much I decided to buy the Switch version as well so I could play it on my lunch break and thanks to a lucky run of good Jokers managed to win on only the second run I attempted on it.
I don't doubt there is a decent amount of strategy and skill involved too, but I can't see how luck doesn't play a part in being successful too.
I often just get Jokers for chips or small +Mult, then the runs where I do get all the best jokers, the cards I draw are always crap at some point and then I simply lose. The game works against me 90% of the time.
