FYI, I did beat it with 4 of a kind and no Telescope. I scored no glass cards through the run, except on the final boss, acorn. The last hand I played was worth 200k chips.
So it seems your theories about the winning conditions for challenge 20 are not the best.
nice! what level did you get your 4 of a kind up to? did you get a bunch of foil, polychrome, holographic?
Here's a screenshot of the last hand. I don't remember having any poly. Maybe I had foil or holo, I don't remember. 1-2 perhaps? But nothing crazy. As you can see, I had many steel cards. That hand scored 200k

The plan, right from the start, was to go for 4 of a kind. It scales pretty well when levelling up, even when compared to secret hands. Often one more card held in hand (steel) is better than a 5th card played per hand. Plus, it allows you to "discard" one card when playing a hand. You can focus on Mars right from the start, no need to unlock a fancy hand first. As I said, no Telescope, and you can see the hand level. Pretty good, only because of Mars availability.
Even at the end, I was using 3 different ranks for my hands. Though 9's were what I had most of, of those three.
