If it's the card I think it is, it'll tell you [COMPATIBLE] if the appropriate slot is compatible with itself. Are you sure that it said compatible? If so, what's the wording of Gift Card?

Brainstorm and Blueprint cannot copy certain Jokers. When you place a Joker to be copied in its spot, hover over Brainstorm and see if it says green "compatible" or red "incompatible", if the latter it means Brainstorm can't copy it. It's intentional design.

Most beginning or end of round effect jokers won't work with during combat copy jokers. Otherwise, one could micromanage the copier mid round to get both effects. In the demo, this mainly applies to gift card, but the main game will have more examples of this, like (I believe) a joker that converts a number of discards into extra hands.
