Bug or not in discarding cards intended or not
Let's say I exhausted my discards, and play a pair. so 2 cards. I put 3 cards I don't want with the pair so I get 5 cards back instead of 2

I know it can be a double edge sword but one would think it would not allow you to play cards that don't fit

Is this intended by design?

Surely it is? I do this all the time, it's definitely part of the strategy.

The scoring system is based on poker.
In poker, a hand is always 5 cards. Maybe 2-5-5-8-9, so you only have a pair, but it's still 5 cards.

One could come up with the opposite argument, that it is illogical to be able to play 1 card only, or 2 cards only. It should always be 5 cards.

So get used to it, it's not a bug, it works that way so the game is more interesting to play by giving you more options.

And that is fine, but then why have the discard option if you get discards through just throwing junk cards in your hand.
And yes maybe they should make you throw down 5 cards regardless but they don't you can just put 1 card down if you want.

Discard plays into many Jokers' perk. Discard = "I don't want to play this card so I'll throw it away". Hand = "Cards I want to play".

Unused cards get thrown out can be considered "game design", so don't question it too much. We aren't playing any traditional poker here, it's a video game.

More options, more decision making, more interesting card game.

You make cash with remaining hands, not with remaining discards. That's a big difference between the two. No discards all hands would make a very different game.

You have a limited number of hands to play. Discards don't count as hands. You can trash cards in the hands you as there are instances where the cards you are holding affect a joker's effect.

TBH I didn't realize until this thread that you could play hands with fewer than 5 cards.

Discarding is extremely valuable if you want to try and improve your hand before actually playing it. There's a big difference between playing currently useless cards in a hand vs discarding them separately. Keep playing and the strategy will become clearer.
