I really think the Barret / Korb duo represent some amazing talent. The songs (the ones with lyrics) really can almost stand on their own.
There are some great tracks on the OST, and I overall think it is a more enjoyable album than Bastion's.
I really wish they had released the "hummed" versions of the songs though. The vocals really make this game.
I also wish they would have released the hum versions! Maybe Supergiant will treat us to a free download one of these days :)
What are your contenders for best game soundtrack? Hard to choose I know. I still listen to Final Fantasy orchestrals all the time, not to mention the Bastion soundtrack.
Other favourites: Deus Ex, Deus Ex HR, Mass Effect, Risk of Rain, Bastion, The Binding of Isaac, Killer Instinct, Mass Effect and yeah, Transistor.
Bastion and Transistor OSTs are not only enjoyable but a bit innovative in that the music feels and sounds new.
It sounds stupid, but the Halo (2?) soundtrack was pretty good IMO, and they even had some real life bands contribute to the album.
I am a huge fan of Final Fantasy: Distant Worlds one and two, those are great orchestral albums that (mostly) focus on Final Fantasy 1-10.
I agree though, Cuitarded, that Korb's music does feel new, and does a great job of storytelling to boot. I've never heard anything quite like it before. It's video game music even my girlfriend will listen to!
Video game music is very underappreciated and underestimated, I believe. Lots of talent out there that gets overlooked, and I am glad to see it getting so much more attention in the recent years.
