obviously this is a perfect narrative device to keep tensions high and to drive the plot, with the siblings needing to do more and more crazy things to appease the demon
Side note: I just watched that scene again, and it's worth noting that it's Ashley that kills the parents before Andrew can do anything about it. Even if you're saying there's a smarter alternative, she's not exactly known for her forethought.
