One thing for sure, the character and NPC interaction is much more developed. I think in PE2 we can expect romance in the colonies to be available as well as the other leveling elements, as a trade-off for what will likely NOT be a full voxel world. That's just my guess. I think what we will see is discoverable mines, which can then be entered as a voxel mining instance, like in MTA, instead of having a voxel world to dig through. The "mines" would be hidden and only discoverable using the scanner. I haven't played MTAS nor do I expect to play MTAE, but my understanding is that colony development and government is also being developed for those games, especially MTAE, according to development releases in the Discord. I can see many elements which could be ported fully intact into the realm of PE2.
Even though there is no apparent activity on PE2, there have been clear comments about designs being worked on for it. I really think everything they are doing can actually be related to and developed into the PE2 world. That may be one of their ultimate goals for all of the work going into MTA.
