To those unable to find the tortoise shell
There has been a bit of confusion with the quest given near the beginning of the game that has people searching for tortoise shells. A few people, both here on the Steam boards and the official forums, have stated it's glitched and they're not getting the tortoise shell from the big spikey enemies.

Well, if you're looking for these puppies:

..Then you're not going to get it. These are the more common types of four-legged shelled enemies in Story Mode as of now. What you need to be looking for are these:

Keep a sharp eye out for their more orange/brown monotone color scheme, and the hammerhead-shark-line design. Here's proof that they drop tortoise shells:

Also, I found one that respawned here:

..and maybe just a few yards north of where my little arrow is at.

I apologize for the low resolution, imageshack started charging so I have no idea what to use now, lol. Hope it helped someone.

Oh... I thought it was the blue, sea-faring looking creatures. Guahh, thanks.

And, for the record, you're going to need a vehicle to take these things down. They AoE the size of a football field for a ton of damage and knockdown.

I so took these down with a rifle! They're slow as dirt, but they take a good 80 shots to kill.

If you have made a rifle in game with 4 barrels then its alot easier!!

is the quest worth doing? i had skiped it cuz the reward didnt seem that important, i forget what the reward was now tho.

The reward is apparently the pigment script, haha! I still haven't had a shell drop after 6 kills but we'll see. As if people were confusing the little green ones with the huge brown turtles?! I thought there was two styles of the huge turtles and people were confusing them.

What. I've taken down three of those creatures and have not yet looted any shells off of them o.0 You waste too much ammo taking them down.

I'm using a gunship with a controlled turret strapped to the bottom myself, no permanent ammo consumed and its cool because its a flying death machine. Flying death machines are cool, even if they're made of wood.

I did this quest later with two followers to distract the beast and I used a blaster so I could attack at range, it also helps if you start your fight with them with a big bunch of foliage between you and them - it confuses the hell out of them.

wonder if my marble rifle that does 556 damage will be enough -_-
IceHedge Mar 18, 2014 @ 8:18am
Just made my first rifle, it has 4 barrells but seems to have a -156% damage penalty, haha. Maybe I didn't add enough material?
Thanks for this, By the way i use Tinypic, give that a try.

did someone told you the worst start of guide is "if you are looking for these they don't look at all as these <pic>" ? :P

This quest man... "Attack big creatures that you do almost no damage too and backpeddle intill they die.. Might wanna get them stuck on the geometry too" Not a fan of this quest lol
