"Cheating" to start with better tools ?
Hi guys. Just started playing this game, it had been on my watchlist for a while but I only took the step when I learnt that servers were down and as an excuse the game was free now. So many good games, so little time...

Anyway, the question is simple : is there any way, including cheating (which nowadays can't hurt anyone as I'm obviously gonna play solo), to start story mode with proper tools ? I don't wat the vorpal doomsday canon or anything, just a shovel, pick and axe that are actually decent and won't take me hours to dig a shelter or harvest some building materials. Also, I still can't fathom how a pickaxe made of wood can break rocks... But hey, video game logic, I guess.

Basically, that's it. I'd like decent tools, faster and more durable, to shape the landscape and harvest faster without havig to rebuild the tools too often. If that's not possible, I'll make do, but I'd really love a better starter kit.

Thanks in advance for your time :)

You don't play with skill tree in story mode, so you can use any weapons/armor/equipment that you can afford. However, you will still need to follow the quest line... and if you try to skip ahead, well, it won't really let you.

That said, I can say that Iron tools are Overpowered for the early game. Once you make it to the Meteor site and mine some Iron and Copper, you can have decent tools to work with.

Armor and weapons are another matter. I would recommend downloading custom weapon ISOs from the Workshop that use the parts that you are given early in the game. The ISOs will probably be better weapons, and like I said, you will not be restricted in what you can use, as long as you have the scripts to make all of the parts.

There is a large Aluminum deposit near the Earth Camp, but you won't get there for a while. Scan as you go, and if you find another Aluminum deposit, take the time to pick some up. The better weapons will likely be made from Aluminum (one of best damage to weight ratios).

The Story Mode is set up to teach you all of the basics of the game in a progressive manner. Once you have played through Story Mode, I would recommend Adventure Mode with Skill Tree on and Scripts locked (unavailable)... which means you have to explore to find everything. It gives purpose to dungeoneering.

Thanks, that will help tremendously :)

I think you get the wooden sword and shield handle scripts early in the game. You can swap out the metal sword handle with a wooden one in the editor, and then be able to make a sword and shield set that is much much stronger/better than what is in the game. Eventually you can swap them out with energy sword and shield, which is better than what players can make, but that is a late game weapon.

Basically find any sword/shield combo that you like, swap out the handles, save a new ISO with the changes, and from then on you will have a powerful early game set that you can use. Switch back to the metal handle version when you get the metal handles unlocked. (This is only really good for story mode, or adventure mode without skill tree... you can't cheat the skill tree, but there are ways to advance quickly to unlock what you need.)

If you try to run ahead of the game in story mode then you'll be tempted to buy all the best scripts that npcs have, and a quest or two later you'll be given the same scripts that you just bought for completing a simple task. Though to be fair there are still items that they have in their shops that you don't get given ... that if you want you'll still need to buy.

Just know that following the story is vital to have quests complete properly.
To complete some quests ... you'll have to complete others before they actually trigger for the following quests to activate. Also nothing happens until you enter the little activating circle on your map, for some quests to trigger.

Allright, so best thing to do is arm myself with patience and wait before I try to dig some grand underground hideout or build a massive castle or whatever. I'll get there, and with the tools for it, eventually.

Thanks for the advice :)

If you are mainly interested in building, I think you will like Adventure mode better. Even using the skill tree, it is faster than story mode. The Story Mode is a really nice planet, but it (I think) especially appeals to people who are quest driven. Adventure mode is more free-flowing and as I said, can be a much faster pace. The downside is that if you try Adventure mode without knowing the game, you will likely be lost as to what to do.

That was my impression too, that's why I started with story mode anyway. In the long run, I think I'll enjoy the game better if I go through it first, even if that means refraining from building at first. I'd rather have a good grasp on what I'm doing :)

IMO it's better to play story mode, all the way through, at least once before trying adventure mode, and definitely recommended before trying the skill tree option....

Story mode is going to teach you everything you need to know about the game, and even encourage you to use the creation editor tools to make custom vehicles / items...

Just have fun with it... you'll see.... It's a pretty great little game.
