I Want to Replay Dreamfall: Longest Journey, BUT....
....my Windows 10 laptop refuses to run it.

Someone gave me Dreamfall: Chapters...(Thanks! :) )...so I decided to load up the two previous games and play them first cause it's been years! Longest Journey played fine, except I had to tutn it off using Task Manager. No big deal otherwise. But Dreamfall: LJ won't.

I've tried to locate patches online, but so far it's all pretty vague. Someone suggested running it inside a Windows XP emulator, but not sure what that will do to my machine.

Any recommendations?

I installed it from a two game set published by aspyr a few years bak. Do I need the steam edition to make it work..?

My folder for DFTLJ doesn' have a seprate Installation folder.....just a single game application file. Properties doesn't give the option in the upper right you mention. a troubleshoot option simple returns "incompatible progam." No idea where to go from here.

Well....darn..... okay, thanks for the assistance, reality is upfrades often make older games obsolete. Crossing my fingers that Red Thread or Funcom will eventually come up with a patch.

Frustrating....because I HAD a Windows 8.1 computer which COULD have run it, but MS did everything short of threaten my family to get me to upgrade....and finally I did because of one particular 'support' worker (not with any civilized company...or civilized species for that matter....) whose attitude toward an issue I was having was essentially "Well what do you expect?? You haven't upgraded to Windows 10 yet, you stupid broad! What are YOU doing on a computer anyway??" I agree with Col. Cambell. Bad manners should be a capital offense. Fortunately, sometimes they still are. Pardon me, pressing my reset button....this is why you shouldn't let service people make you feel stupid.

I have 64-bit Windows 10 Home edition and out of curiosity I just re-installed the game through Steam. It worked perfectly fine for me without having to do any messing around with settings.

So while Windows 10 might be the problem, it's not a universal problem for everyone apparently.

I tried reinstalling my version......no luck. Doing online research I found that when they went to windows10, MS blocked access by the type of DRM Dreamfall uses. Apparently whatever they used caused a lot of Windows users major issues, and they decided to disallow it rather than provide a workaround. It's not impossible it's just that MS elected to no longer provide support for it. Both Steam and GOG have working versions that are quirky on some, but not all Windows 10 machines, and reinstalling the game usually fixes it.

I'm disabled, and living on a fixed income so I can't buy a new copy of the game now. (Currently having to recertify after SSA decided I needed to prove I was still needing my medical coverage. It'll be straightened out eventually, but I do have an idea that doesn't involve someone buying it for me. If somebody out there is running Windows between XP and 8.1 and isn't planning to upfrade to Windows 10 anytime soon, would you care to buy the Steam version and trade that copy for the original DVD? Just a thought. :)

...Or does this strike people as too close to begging....? Not trying to trigger any slap-fighting here....

No worries! I bought my Steam Copy today, so unless it fails to work, I'm peachy like Nietzsche. :)

Alternatively you can just watch the recap video on Dreamfall: Chapters. It follows on directly from Dreamfall: TLJ. The Longest Journey was kinda separate as it followed the journey of April Ryan

You might try to right click the .exe and select to run it in "compatibility mode"

So far no issues really other than getti used to the UI. Had to do that to replay the original Longest Journey too. The game did skip over one little fight scene...(the twins in Reza's apartment appear but don't actually attack, though Zoe tells Liv they do.)...but the game is as vivid and well done as I remember. So glad I was able to actually afford to pick itup this month. :)
