Puzzle with monster in closet

I've watched a video and stil unsure how to do it, have watched video, used light on light bulb, turned, used light on closet door but she says that either it is took quick or it's not enough light, this is the first puzzle I've come across and if I'm struggling at the entry level puzzle doubt i'm going to have much fun playing the rest, enjoy the story and VO though just hate difficult puzzles.

You need to shine the light away from the closet, so that the tentacles are out. Then mouse over to it and operate with the hourglass icon on it, so that it freezes. Then you can shine the light.

The closet will open once you have got rid of the monster in it by shining the torch on the monster before it hides again.
