I've played all tree game. Story is very interesting. When I've finished Dreamfal: The longest journey (second game) I've be like "What?! And what next? WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥♥♥ NEXT!!?". But developers say nothing, even more, publisher (Funcom) was not interesting in this franchise any more and switch derelopers to mmo projects that satisfine their finansial needs.
For fans it was it,.. nothing,... silense for 8 years
Until creator o The Longest Journey and his team separate from Funcom to finaly finish this trilogy.
Process of development Dreamfall Chapters was hard, may be for some thing was not enough money or time (specialy time), but result is Worth It.
Before play Chapters I've replay The longest journey and Dreamfal: The longest journey (and you'r rely need it to understand WTF is going on?).
When Dreamfall Chapters (and with it all TLJ saga) was finished I was satisfied at 100% =D
And after 3 days I've did it again O_O (replay Dreamfall Chapters) cose I want it? cose I want to see all threds of story.
Fieeuu I'm finish
I think you'r understand my point of view :)

As for the original Longest Journey... eh. I got it, mostly because I've been a fan of this series for a very long time and I felt I had to play it all, but it didn't add much to the experience. There's a few neat connections to Chapters and it's always nice to have some backstory, and as a stand alone game published in the nineties it's pretty damn good, but I don't feel its altogether necessary. I guess it's more of a personal preference.
But yeah, the second game was great. And it's neat to revisit places you were in before and see how they've changed :)
That being said the second game was a lot more satisifying because it revists a lot of locations and characters from the first game. I wouldn't say storywise the first game isn't absolutely necessary though. You could just read a synopsis if you can't get into it.
OP, play the first game: it's one of the best if not the best Point 'n Click adventure ever made
