UPDATE: I managed to get it to work. Before launching the game you must go to the game's settings through Steam, then go to Compatibility and then turn on the "Force Compatibility..." checkmark and it will auto-select "Proton Experimental". Leave the settings menu and then some stuff will start being downloaded. After everything is downloaded try launching the game again. A different launcher screen from before should show up and even though it will be lower resolution don't worry, once in game it will be right. Just tap "Play" and the game should launch fine.
It beats me why the game is considered Verified, at most it should only be considered Playable, but considering what's going on with some unsupported games, I think the Unsupported description fits it better.
UPDATE 2: The game runs well, but every now and then there are some connection issues (I believe from the IOI servers part) that prevent you from saving and the only fix is to restart the game. Sometimes that takes a while to happen, other times it happens in a matter of 10 to 20 minutes.
Same issue of undetected steam deck controller, greyed out in Hitman gamepad settings. SteamOS final or beta, I tried both. I'll test your workaround now.
Thanks so much for sharing this with us.
I'm also puzzled by the Steam deck compatibility validation for this game...
