Jianzhou->Manchu->Qing is a blast for me so far, and I've heard good things about Ethiopia. Both of those sort of qualify as "obvious" though.

Playing one of the Malaysian nations is pretty fun, and I've heard a lot of people like Oman as being a sort of "Muslim Venice".

Vijayanagar. Ayutthaya. It's not that hard.

I second the Manchu suggestion. Kilwa and Songhai are really fun starts in Africa.

Japan, Timurids, Oirats, are fun but obvious. Korea actually has some pretty nice naval/trade focused national ideas and seems like it might be an interesting game. Mamlukes could be another interesting game, playing off the Turks and Iberians against each other. From what I've read Nepal has some really great national ideas, almost like an Indian Prussia, only if you can manage to survive and dominate the subcontinent then it could be a fun game as an expansionist militaristic Hindustan.
I have had an absolute ball playing Iroquois and Huron in North America. They have excellent national ideas (especially Iroquois ones affecting trade). One Iroquois game, I survived westernization as Iroquois and had 3/4 of North America by game end, having beat each of the major Europeans several times (including no fewer than 6 victorious colonial wars against Great Britiain and colonies, 4 against Spain and colonies and 3 against France and colonies). They are a diffiicult challenge, especially if you conquer and clan-settle/colonize to a large (40+ provinces) nation before westernizing... but once westernization is survived, with dominance of most North American trade nodes, they can be a major world power.

I like Cherokee since its fun colonizing North America as a Native American country and you can get an achivement :)

Ming is fun. It gets very, very dull after you Westernize as its just ludicrously overpowered but until then it has a nice pace which is very different to most nations.

Timurids -> Mughals is also an interesting game.

In the Americas I think Cuzco is kind of interesting and really not that difficult.
Try Portugal or Spain if you want an interesting African game :^)

I've wondered about this. How fast can you actually westernize as Ming? I imagine it would take a fairly long time to go all the war around Africa with chinese tech.

I think playng American natives is interesting, trying to build up a decent territory before the smelly, dirty, smallpox ridden Europeans come over.

The problem is always going to be the technology slog. To be fair, think they need to review the technology situation, it's just not fun being so slow that you can't really progress in the gamme in any way.

Russia likes to colonize, and will most of the time get to asia in pretty much no time at all. The usual thing with westernizing Ming is through an already westernized Russia. You need to wait for russia to get over to asia + westernize but other than that you are pretty much set if you conquer the manchu tribes, especially if you start to colonize sibiria yourself.

Not really that much of an issue with North American natives, because of their unique mechanics. You don't need to invest many points in the normal tech tree--in fact it's a waste to do so, since once you reform the government you will instantly be given 90% of your western neighbor's tech levels. Until then, you have plenty of fun internal development to do with the native idea tree and native buildings. http://www.eu4wiki.com/Tribal_nation
I love playing as Ming mostly because of the high-flavor events.

1550 is doable, although it's much, much better to go via America to Panama or the Caribbean as Alaska is much easier to get to since 1.8. Ming doesn't tend to fall behind that far in tech as it can his good advisors, so it can catch up incredibly fast after westernising too. I managed to westernise, kill off the hordes and successfully contain Russia before it even started colonising once.

tabaristan makes fun to play.good ideas and a rich country, just a little bit small :-) but you can change that...and when you switch to persia it could be more fun because the persian ideas and all the cores you can take from poor timur ones.but in fact-its too easy from there on
