Tips for Athens/Greece?

Seems like most of the information out there regarding tiny countries overcoming the Ottomans is out of date. In particular, the rules regarding strait crossings and the increased size of the Ottoman navy at the start seem to make things more difficult than they used to be.

It's one of those "impossible" nations. The stars have to align and you have to sacrifice your firstborn son to the gods of old to even break free from Byzantium. And when you do, the Ottomans won't give you time to build up and get worthwhile alliances. The only chance is probably to take a province from Tunis/Tlemcen/Morocco (while they are being destroyed by Castille/Portugal who you need to ally later), lose Athens to move capital and get over to America.

I've been told joining the HRE is a strategy, not sure if it's still a thing, as Yaldabaoth said the stars have to align, but you could get support independence from the ottomans, ally with them, defeat venice and take land neighboring Austria, improve relations with Austria and meet any other requirements to join the HRE, then you can expand elsewhere to build up your country so you can get some large European allies to fight the Ottos, and/or maybe provoke the Ottos into attacking you with Austria+allies joining the war (but you have to make sure Austria keeps the HRE throne)

How I got the Academical achievement:

1. When Ottoman troops massed adjacent to Constantinople, I declared independence war right before Ottos attacked Byzantium.
2. Ottos annexed Byz and I got independence.
3. Got friendly with Ottos and also built up an alliance with PLC.
4. At dip tech level 11 plus the range increase from Exploration, I escaped to Columbia.
5. Mass colonization of South America got me the 50 universities.

Isnt the easiest way just to ask ottos to support independance? (Then using them to eat mamluks etc) Or does that not work anymore?

I've done exactly this to get the achievement, then just expanded in Africa.
