some daymios have better mil ideas and some specialize in other regards.

Looked up their Ideas in my phone now(at work) and they look pretty nice with all those Leader Pips :)
For a Japan WC it would probably be best to take exploration first and to try to get 4 provinces in Cuba - stating them WITHOUT a 5th province to disable the CN, that should make it rather easy to spawn all Institutions
Meanwhile conquering south and trying to reach India
Oh, and Uesugi is 100% better, Oda is simply too small.
Planning to start this next week. I can be wrong but it feels like a pretty strait forward and quick thing to conquer the Japanese Island with all the Diamyos right? I can be wrong but it feels like i Mini-HRE where noone else can interfear right?
Converting to Sunni via the indonesian states like brunei could also be useful for maximising your cavalry potential as Nanbu[eu4.paradoxwikis.com] also, including the free +5% discipline tradition, +10% morale and useful +10% shock damage NI's availble through high numbers of horses and army compositions to offset your bad tech group.
amago has good ideas aswell, inflation reduction, army tradtion decay, combat ability, morale, discipline aswell as trade

They are overall just better. At the start rival those with only 1 ally and humiliate 3 times, that gives you 900 free points - i just played a multiplayer game and was easily ahead in tech, had points for my first idea AND spawned Renaissance.
Dont eat like crazy but rather take it slow and humiliate a bit more - around 6 times total.
Also since you havent been in Japan yet, forgot to mention:
You get a free cb for neighbours, BUT you only get 50% AE if you have a claim on them (all provinces with claims 50% AE). So make claims at all times.
Once you ate half of Japan you can take Kyoto, if you fully annex Ashikaga you gain all other Daimyos as subjects. You gotta watch out tho whether you have more admin or diplo points and whether you want to annex more daimyos first or you wanna integrate them (also note that due to AE integrating can take a while)
You cant become a tributary of Ming so ignoring them at first might be better. Exploration should be first idea, if you hop to indonesia and switch main node you can get a good trade
You can also just concentrate your effort on South East Asia + India and eat Ming later.
This is truly an amazing example how great this community can be! :)
I fact I´m starting to be so excited of this new campaign that I will probably leave my Byzantium-Forming Rome campaign... When you´ve pretty much destroyd all that can sabotage it for you it get so frekin boring to just go in with 200k troops and eat some land.
The Japanese island is my last place on the map to play and it feels almost new and fresh! Saved it for last :)
