The lore is Warhammer Fantasy, not Warcraft, regardless the lore and fluff in Blood Bowl is pretty stand alone from what I can tell.
If you enjoy XCOM and know how to manage risks then there could get many hours out of this game, however, even if you are a fast learner it will take quite a number of games/teams before you gain the insights to really play and build your teams.
Does help to understand this game though. Don't go into it thinking it's like turn based Madden, or pretty much like any other game you can think of. Play the campaign, read up a bit or you'll struggle.
Knowing Warhammer lore can be helpful, but it isn't necessary at all. Most teams are fairly self-explanatory: Orcs are, well, orcs, dwarfs are dwarfs, elves are elves and they mostly behave how you'd expect. That said, it can be helpful to know a little about Warhammer lore, such as why orcs would be confused about the concept of playing over a ball instead of brutally murdering the other team, or why and how Chaos gets mutation upgrades and other teams don't.
A LOT of bad luck. As in, a game where 22 virtually incompetent special-needs people with barely enough INSUFFICIENT mental capacity and manual dexterity to operate a stairway in a downward direction, proceed to engage in fisticuffs over a bar of soap coated with sex lube.
PICKING UP a ball is a feat that only the best and most capable specialists with extensive practice and training can accomplish. Half the time, or less even.
