Help: How to push off the pitch?

I'm playing the campaign, and "pushing off the pitch" doesn't seem to work as I assumed.
Do you have to push at a perfect 90*angle to the border you're trying to push them across?
I've tried blocking at other angles and I keep expecting to see the traditional 3 arrows pointing away from the direction of my push (or hit)... but I only see (and can only select) arrows that keep the opponent on the pitch. Any arrows leading out of bounds are not displayed.

You have to make the block where all valid push options are off the pitch

So when you had 2/3 of the push spots off the pitch. You would need to fill in the 3rd spot with another player before making the block. So the only valid option is to push them off the pitch.

When the situation is right. You won't get to select anything after the push. They will just auto get pushed off the pitch then.

Pushing off the pitch occurs when a player that is being pushed cannot occupy a free square. Fill in free space with other players or indeed push at a 90° angle.
