Pseudoregalia

Will we see more of Sybil again?
As in, will this game ever get a sequel or will it be a one and done deal? I think the character design is too good to be wasted on one game; a Klonoa situation would be great (whereby the character visits different dream worlds with a different cast in every game).

Exactly, there is way more depth to Sybil than just her lack of pants/Cuteness. Brilliant work by the person who created her and rittz. I think I read someone other than rittz came up with her design, if I'm wrong, I apologize.

I wouldn't know myself, but the understanding of symbolism, esoterism and aesthetics behind it, as well as the general design of the game and all it's architecture in general are what fascinated and really drew me to the game.

I could gush about it all day, but then I'd sound like an obsessed schizo.

I was wrong, it was an article about the game and it had a tweet from an artist on twitter saying “I drew Sybil from Psedoregalia” but they didn’t mean that they designed the character. I only recently discovered this game after going down a rabbit hole of indie retro-themed titles.

And don’t stop on my account, what’s the point of a game’s discussion forum if you can’t give props to the developers for what they created.

To answer the question of the original post; seems so. In the latest patch the dev put, "as for sybil ... I think you'll meet her again, one day." Highly suggesting more games down the line with sybil as the MC

Edit: Spelling

I'm so used to edging to art of Sybil that pops up on my Twitter feed that I honestly forgot she was from a game.

I don’t think it was necessary to tell us that, everyone loves Sybil but that’s oversharing IMO.

I do sometimes wonder how much of Pseudoregalia's success is owed to word-of-mouth through horny fan art (just like Nier Automata). Like Corn Kidz 64 is another excellent goat-in-a-N64-throwback-3d-platforming-dreamworld that came out in 2023, and Pseudo has like 10x amount of user reviews.

I would argue that Pseudoregalias movement and simple aesthetics in general just looks way more fun and interesting, to me personally at least.
I remember seeing a short gameplay on YouTube, really maybe a minute or so and got immediately hooked like "I need to play this NOW!".
Meanwhile Corn Kidz 64, i see "Well that looks like a nice cute little game, i'll eventually buy it later when i'm in the mood".

Yeah, IMO Sybil is very interesting but the low-poly nature of the game makes it kind of hard to believe that horny fans (or horny fan art) are driving the game's sales. What attracted to me to the game is its retro art-style, movement mechanics, and interesting character designs. The whole world looks intriguing and I just wanted to explore it. I'm old enough to have played N64 games as a kid, back when 3d games were still new. Any game that is a convincing replica of those games I played is going to be interesting to me. A lot of games attempt to emulate that look and feel, but this game really nails it with the sound design as well. I think Sybil is an interesting character but her attractiveness doesn't really have any bearing on me wanting to buy the game (it's more of an added bonus).

Design is a big part of it. Like I mentioned 2B before, but her popularity also owes a lot to her unique design and aesthetic choices, not just horny fans (same could be said about Sybil). Like Penny's Big Breakaway is a recent platformer that came out that seems to be underperforming, and I'd hazard a guest that a some of that is owed to the character design and toybox artstyle (that almost reminds me of the maligned Alegria artstyle).

It would be a fun exercise though to survey people on how they heard about this game. Even if you aren't a horndog or a furry, the guys who spread the word might of been (like every YT video I've seen talking about the game and the first thing they mention is Sybil's ass, some even as the thumbnail). For me personally I am a major horndog, but I got into this game before there was any fan art or video reviews. Like about a few weeks after it come out, after seeing the dev post gameplay clips on Twitter (same with Corn Kidz).

That's interesting to think about, I wasn't even really aware of it, but Penny's Big Breakaway is one that I passed on, partly because of the weird look to the main character. More so the colonial looking design (like she came from the 1700s). But also I heard it has collision bugs where you can clip through the geometry and last I check a couple weeks ago, they still hadn't fixed it.

I agree about Nier Automata, 2b and all the YoRha look really interesting to me. Why do they dress like that? Why do they wear blindfolds? These questions made me want to play it, plus the soundtrack is amazing, the game is really fun to play and the story really feels like it matters. I was hooked just from the first intro when 2b is descending into the city with her squad and all the others get taken out except for her. That game is just a masterpiece IMO. It will be a crime against video games (and art) is Square doesn't greenlight another Nier game.

This entire thread:
"I came for Sybil's ass. I stayed for the game."
Also the dev has another game listed on Steam. Electrokinetic which in every way seems to build on Pseudoregalia's movement system. But as most of the thread stated, it was Sybil that drew them to the game initially. That is very important. Electrokinetic doesn't have that eye catcher and I'm quite concerned that it's going to be a sleeper hit because of that. I've played lots of games that had very few sales in spite of a great core gameplay loop because the Steam page didn't have much eye candy on it.

I think you are right, games need a little extra something (like Sybil's cheeks, in the case of Pseudoregalia) on top of being fun and entertaining, maybe that is the magic ingredient for success when combined with a little luck. Especially nowadays when a lot of bigger western games tend omit sexy characters. I guess I was wrong, sexiness alone won't make a game be awesome but good game + sexy characters is a magical combination.

I could picture it's visual design maybe being problem in sales. Even if you ignore the character design, I don't think cyberspace quite stands out as much as "Gothic architecture that looks like it came from an unreleased N64 game". As for me, "roguelike" and "randomly generated levels" are like poison to me. I'll still play it, but if I didn't already know the developers previous work I probably would never touch it.

I wasn’t aware of the game before Ravo posted it, but yeah, it certainly is not as interesting looking as pseudoregalia. I hope he’s successful with the game and I’ll likely pick it up also, but agree that it could see less success. Those characters don’t look interesting, big downgrade from Sybil.
