What am i doing wrong? Enemies are very hard
For example there is this level 18 side mission i'm trying to complete as level 20. It is about beating the college's tournament winner or something. So i see the cinematic play and then he just utterly rapes my ship in 2 seconds.

Now, there is no way i could have a better ship yet, they cost tens of millions. All my weapons and systems are maximally upgraded, using ripper 2 railgun and pulverizer missiles with artemis 3, level 3 shield recharge etc. Obviously i'm missing something... Also enemies classified as impossible only go down after random allies decide to come help me. I'm dying on some normal missions too occasionally.

try capturing and selling ships, it seems to be a pretty solid way to make money.

What Forzian says is good advice. At your level, capturing only small ships might be the option. Another good way of boosting credit income is mining - if you find the more valuable asteroids. Good asteroids are glowing ones but watch out for other treasure hunters. I can give you two tips on how to increase speed of money accumulation with mining - try to obtain any kind of cargo ship for greater cargo hold, and, while in asteroid field, strip all non-heavy weapons from your ship. Then, you will get the default "mining beams" that crack asteroids very fast with very low energy consumption. Only downside is that mining beams deal very low damage against enemy ships so be careful to escape asteroid field in a timely manner.

Oh, and another useful info - all enemy ships on low levels start with handicap (weak shields and no use of skills) and on level 10-15 handicap gets removed and they increase in strength. As you progress further, you should catch up and surpass them in strength again. Hope it helps...

Few things. First i found that there is difficulty in options, i set it Easy for this first game at least. Second is i took a wormhole deep into hostile space and somehow managed there. I think i started by finding a station with some cheap'ish big ship with 30+ troopers, and used it to capture more ships. I think what i fly now was 1 of the captures http://starpoint-gemini-2.wikia.com/wiki/Neptune With that coming back to complete the side quest was already trivial. Just made a mistake by accidentally selling my best gun along with the first ship (instead of unmounting it first), but i'm now using a better one so there's that...

Yeah it's incredibly important to change your ships as you progress unless you're one of those crazy longtime captains having learned how to outsmart bigger opponents in 10-20 minutes long battles and utilizing skills for that purpose. The frigate is also a good ship for setting up trading or mining as it has decent cargo at your level.

In general keep a close eye on the stat's of ships in every station/planet that has a shipyard to make some planning on to what to go for next.

Safe Travels - Captain !

The Balancing of this Game is simply s**t.

I don't see how it is friend, If you having issues with higher level ships giving you issues, you in the wrong territory. The wiki has a map showing you Level tier or area's which can help new players not get out of their depth, assist in capping ships of their tier etc.

Imo SPG2 could be harder, But I also am one of those crazy captains that the harder it is the more I like it.

Problem is that missions that are your level or below give the trouble. As i mentioned the 1 mission, 2 levels below me, in 2 seconds that i was dead there was no time to react. My second attempt at it had my shields tuned to maximum to begin with, but it didn't help.

As Tanvaras said, this is not a game that will hold your hand. Gemini is a harsh universe, you may accidentally end up in a higher territory and get killed. There are community made maps that can show you what is level range of each sector. Also, giving a comment like that after less than 3 hours in game is not very fair. There are people that have 1000+ hours in game and are still enjoying it, and when they told us in the past (during Early Access) that something is wrong with balance, they actually explained what and where and even gave us some suggestions that we implemented in game. That was constructive, this isn't.

Zaflis, when you try to see if something is too hard for you, you have to take into account many things. Level is just a guideline. You have to decide if the time came to replace your ship, upgrade your weapons, maybe try a different officer/enhancements build that could make all the difference. Starpoint Gemini 2 is relatively easy to learn, but pretty hard to master. We have people that managed to make almost invincible ships by carefuly calculating skills, perks, officers and enhancements. And there are people in even bigger ships, like me, that still die for stupid reasons. But it's not the game, it's me. ;)

I think a lot of the problems with ships suddenly becoming hostile in missions would be solved by simply spawning them outside weapons range, and then allowing the enemy ships to close in on the player like a normal stand-off confrontation, as opposed to simply having the ships next to you suddenly unload everything they've got at near point-blank range.

This also seems to be a problem in the DLC where I had several ships suddenly turn hostile on me. Luckily I was in a decked-out dreadnought, but it sure as hell gave me a fright!

Well, you've got a point there. Although Darth Vader in Battle of Hoth said that the admiral dropped too close to the planet so rebels were alert and could organize a defense, and here's is the opposite, if they drop too close, you don't have time to react.

To be fair, I know exactly what mission you are talking about, and I'm pretty sure I either did it yesterday or the day before. I was in a Horizon Frigate I had recently purchased and fitted with the highest damage plasmas I could afford, along with the most expensive/damaging Enhancements. The guy I had to destroy was in a Gemini Prowess Destroyer. No, I did not expect him to be right in front of me after the cut scene, and yes, he unloaded on me. He almost downed my shields, so I had to turn and run for a bit to cover my damaged shield, while I used shield boosters and transferred power from engines to shields. After some circling, firing my heavy weapons (which hit for about 800 at the time, if I'm not mistaken), and using skills, he was dead. Took maybe 3-5 minutes of working at that ship, and yes, he did initially do some pretty heavy damage to me, which was not that big of a problem after I figured-out I could tank him and expose a different part of my shields by... turning.

So there you have it. You can beat that mission easily with at least a Frigate of some sort. Gunships and Corvettes need not apply unless you have some super weapons and mad piloting skills. Considering that by the time I upgraded to the Horizon from the Adhara Corvette I was popping Adhara's with 1 volley, yes, I would say it does make sense upgrading if for nothing else then the hull and shield points. I was able to destroy random pirate Battleships with the Horizon (with some timing and running at times), so I will say that it's more than capable of destroying a Destroyer in a 1vs1.

I've been playing this game on Normal since last Saturday. If anything, the game tends to be border-line easy most of the time, only occasionally offering a serious challenge due to my cockiness and the fact that enemy ships know how to disable my engine and cloak, especially when flying in larger numbers with Battleship support.

You, my friend, just need to bring a bigger gun to deal with the situation. ;)

Cap a few ships (even if it requires you to return to a station to get more troops). sell them, and buy something if you can't simply cap something better.

P.S. I had an issue finding Frigates and Cruisers to cap in the part of the galaxy I was in at the time, but I had more than enough money to buy one of the several available at stations/planets.
