i know this may seem really nitpicky but i really dont have that much time to play but i really like the missions and story

Allocate energy distribution to engines and use a speed booster (a consumable item that can be purchased at most stations or looted from derelicts that have been salvaged by a 'scavenger swarm'). I've set my key bindings so that the 'Home' key gives full power to the engines, 'Delete' gives full power to the shields, 'Page Down' gives full power to the weapons, and 'End' equalizes power distribution.

Ok, does it matter when you set the engine speed and use the item?

can I do it while in flight and get the boost?

Yes, you can do it while in PTE mode and yes speed increase will be noticeable.

Very noticable, you can mouse over the blueish bar under your hull (green bar middle bottom of UI) and it will tell you your speed, redistributing power to engines while in PTE can double your speed.

As far as a speed boost consumable goes, the vanilla one is 75% for 30 seconds. but theres a mod in the workshop that makes it 200% for 30 seconds, which in my option makes it much more worthwhile :)

Worst case, you can edit the .shp files in the spg2/models/ships folder to increase your speed, though this will also increase your speed outside of PTE. it is your base speed.

Skills can also help. any skill that says it gives +speed augments your base speed, which in turn augments your PTE speed (as far as I can tell, everything is based on the base speed of the ship)

Super Alexa, guys covered everything I think. Modding, Speed boost Item, Energy transfer to engines, there are also officers that give you increased speed.
