I like to buy speed booster modules as they only cost 500 each and boost your speed by 75%. Also make sure to get the upgrade on your engines for more speed.
I found those mechanics quite expensive most of the time and often took the slow route. But now I got the biggest, baddest ship out there, am doing the story missions and they often send you to far away places so i used this stuff a bit.
Wormholes work somewhat like T-Gates and are free to use, but they have some disadvantages compared to T-Gates. They usually come in pairs are not connected to a larger network the way T-Gates are. Also they don't ask for confirmation the way T-Gates have, so you can accidentally fall into them by getting too close and they cause some hull damage when used.
Riftways don't show up on the map (not now at least) but are visible as transparent green "tubes" floating in space. You can use them for free and can travel along them to move very quickly as long as you can stay inside.
That said they have the same quirk as the Wormholes in that they don't ask for confirmation, so you can accidentally fall into them when you don't want to sometimes.
