How fast am I going ?
Hey Hey

I might be missing something really obvious, in which case please hit me over the head with a wet fish ...

... but how fast am I going ?

I see there's ships with different specs, so I can choose one ship that has a speed that is faster, relative to my current vessel.

When in a ship, I can do the "Power to the Engines!!" deal and boost my speed, all good.

But .. I mean .. okay, on target, I can see distance to target, I can see those numbers whittling down .. but how can I tell my actual speed. And ideally a targets speed .. and even better .. matching my speed to theirs, getting behind them and gently sliding my railgun bullets into their back door ....

Er. Did that get creepy ?

Anyway, am I missing something obvious ? I see the speed meter, which basically displays the proportional speed of my vessel to it's overall potential. I mouse over it and see that it just has a percentile number, like 80/100 or 100/100 at full speed.

What I want to know is .. my vessel is flying 1027 kilometres per second (or whatever). Enemy vessel is moving 540 kps (or whatever), I can even match speed to target and then increase or decrease it slightly if I want to hang behind them.

I understand the game is an ongoing work, and I really like the game, I'm not whining about a missing feature or anything .. just asking:

1) is this in there and I'm missing something obvious ?
2) if not, is there an intention to add it ?
3) if so, would love to see other stats and info about your vessel, anomalies, etc *

* if you want volunteers from the community to help write copy, I'm sure you'd be able to get some

Anyways, thanks for your time.

Extra comment - so the energy triangulation triangle .. er .. you know .. where you can prioritise systems .. shields, speed, weapons .. love it.

When I slide it from 0 energy put to engines from 50% to 100%, the distance to target definitely counts down faster.

It would just be nice to see my speed jump from 500 units to 750 units to 1000 units

(units being whatever scientific math is relevant for space flight)

If you press F3 you can see your current speed in "space units" or whatever it is.

Speed units aren't specified anywhere, they are just units. You could estimate them though by assuming that the starting planet has a diameter of earth.

From my memory it would take about 5 seconds to fly by the full planet on 200 speed.
So it would end up as 15000 km / 5s = 3000 km / s = 200 speed.

We can't see enemy speed yet and with the current state of A.I. 'smartness' it wouldn't even be that usefull :P

F3 gives me the static ship stats ... the numbers don't change as I increase/decrease the speed of the vessel.

To be clear, what I'm interested in is something like a speedometer in your car.

Current pile of junk goes from 0-60 if 10 seconds, and it's maximum speed without spontaneous explosion is 80.

I jump into a shiny new car, and see that it goes from 0-100 in 5 seconds, and it's maximum speed caps out at 160.

(and I can see that in real time, with the sensation of speed, while I fly it)
(and I know, based on the travel speed of the enemy ship, that I can fly much faster .. or that I can never catch up to them .. or whatever other little mental calculations I want to perform)

Right now it just seems a little bit vague.

How fast am I ? Dunno. I'm 100/100 and my vessel's speed is charted at 52 u/s therefore I guess I'm going 52us (whatever exactly that is).

And to work that out I had to check my speed meter, the vessel specs, and it really gives me no insight in terms of my speed relative to everything out there in the wide wide universe.

Well, thanks - it's good to know I wasn't missing anything obvious.

I personally, would like a speedo at some point in the game, even if it's just tied into the current speed bar .. like instead of seeing 100/100 (I can already see graphically I'm at max speed - give me the info of 52u/s (or whatever).

Butterfly kisses to you all.

Mouse over the blue bar under the green bar in the middle section of your HUD
your speed is listed in units / second

I must be missing something, because when I do that, I get 100/100 .. it's just scaling up as a percentage. Unless I jump into another ship and it's 114/114 or whatever and the 0-100 in my starter ship is just a coincidence ??

Thanks anyway, it's not really important to find what the game tells me now, I just don't find the info adequate for my needs. I think being able to get a bunch of info about the relative power, speed, shields and whatnot would really improve the game, if it's there it just seems a bit to 'tucked away' for me right now..

I have managed to get my ship going 228 u/s in PTE mode
Silver Smurfer Oct 2, 2014 @ 5:57pm
the speed value shown on bar is the actualy measurement of speed, not percentage or engine power level or anything. It's speed.
Groota Oct 2, 2014 @ 6:57pm
all my ships: Tauras, Legionarre, Abija, and Paladin have the same max speed in PTE mode of 220 with 100% engine power, and boost to 298 with speed booster. On mouse over on the blue bar, it seems like first number is actual, second is max speed, so the first rises during acceleration until they match.

@o0simon0o: If the planets they have their are the size of the Earth, holy crap! Our ships are enormous monstrosities! :) even the gunships would be the size of small countries.
