The X universe already does everything this game does and more, only thing this game does better is ship customization, and X3 might do that too, just that I've never found the right menu... =p
That's kind of the difference really, this game is like the light version of X3, it's easier to just pick up and play, but it doesn't have as many options. For example, you can't build space stations in this game.
So there's no Station owning, setting up automatic traderoutes and fleets are limited to maximum two mercenaries you can hire (well not only two, but max two at a time).
It's a pretty different game compared to those if you ignore the fact they all take place in space and has spaceship flight as their main feature. I'd encourage you to check out some videos of the game before buying. Especially if you're expecting something along the lines of the X-series.
This is a small indie studio (9 ppl in all) with a single game in their catalogue. It's still a great game IMO.
For videos I recommend this guy's videos. Some of the are pre-release so bear that in mind (or check the date on them. Game released September 26th 2014.

Edit: Sorry the video linked was a mistake. That's from the beta stage. If you copy the link there's a playlist of 46 videos.
We made Starpoint Gemini 2 - a sequel to Starpoint Gemini, but superior in all fields. Graphics, ships design, playability, scale... SPG 2 is a combat oriented sim with RPG elements and you command big, captial ships, not small fighters.
And still you did make a combat oriented, no-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ version of X3 that I can just pick up and play whenever I want to blow some idiots sky high for credits or just for crossing me when flying to my destination.
And it does that so damn well! XD
Of course Starpoint Gemini 2 has similarities with all above mentioned games. We are all gamers and we all played all those other games and some inspiration came from that.
And it's in space. :)
We just don't wanna advertise this game as better than any of other mentioned because it's not better, it's different. It has more content than Elite as many people mentioned, but let's not forget that it's on the market longer than Elite. We have trading, but definately not in-depth as X series. Mining is, in my opinion as an 8 years EvE player, better and more dynamic in SPG 2 then in EvE Online. It was better then Elite's mining mechanics too, but I didn't try mining after these new patch with drones so maybe that changed. Of course there are many people who like to leave their mining barges in asteroid film and go watch a movie cause it tooks forever.
Star Citizen could well be the best space sim ever created, but it's too early to say since it's nowhere near release. We will soon have No Man's Sky, which will no doubt raise the ladder for space sims, but it's a bit too "colorful" for my taste. But yeah, of course I'll play it, that goes without saying.
Starpoint Gemini 2, for me, and I'm saying that as a gamer who was just playing the game for more than a year before joining LGM team, has that relaxing atmosphere and somehow always keeps me coming back. Sarge can maybe explain this better since he has more than 2000 hours in game.
All in all, I'm glad that new space games are coming out and that you showed us your continues support and enabled us to work on the next project we're really excited about. After a few "dry" years for space genre, we have once again something to be excited about and I look forward to it, as a gamer and part of LGM team.
P.S. Did you notice that original posters who asked us about the game in their threads in the last few days, usually don't come back and don't buy the game, but thankfully, open a nice and interesing discussions. I thank them for that.
P.S.2 - If you're asking yourself howcome I'm typing these long walls on text, I'm on vacation so I have time to do it. You're doomed!
P.S.3 And yeah, I'm spamming monster game emoticons cause I collected all of them. Which cannot be said about my pokemons.
I just watched some Freespace 2 videos yesterday. It's amazing what the modding scene has done to that game. I'll probably pick it up next month on GOG because I never played it but it looks like another of those classic spacesim games that one ought to try if interested in the genre.
Just reinstalled Crysis and saw this brilliant mod called StarCry which unfortunately is still not finished. But damn, Stargate with Crysis graphics and gameplay. That's nice.
I mean, there are more expensive cargo ships, but that one has 250 cargo capacity and some mining beams...
*Although I do admit to a certain satisfaction in being the avatar of destruction...
You can always go straight to freeroam, Master Jedi, and skip the story completely. Make your own as you progress through the game... ;)
In regards to what there is to do in the game; I've been mainly doing freelance missions: Assasinations (kill marked ship(s)), Captures (capture marked ship), scanning for anomalies (go here and scan this), and Taxiing (Take person from station A to station B). The trading seems to be pretty simplified, but this could just be me as I'm just starting out. You can see items in starports or worlds as well as in your inventory when you go to the market that are marked in green/red/yellow (good price/bad price/average) and this, IMO, is a pretty nice system for me so I don't have to write down what station sells what for cheap and buys what for high *cough E:D cough*. The combat is pretty laid back and I think the learning curve is on the easy side, which is not a bad thing.
From what I've described the game sounds pretty generic and underwhelming, which couldn't be farther from the truth. There is just something in the world (galaxy) that grabs you and pulls you in. I'm having a great time with this game and at the price its at I would recommend it to pretty much anyone into space sims/piloting games.
I lost self control during this summer sale and bought about 35 games. No too expensive but still. :D
In E:D there are useful applications for tracking your supply/demand like Cmdr's Tool, I use that for trading since Slopey's BPC tool didn't work for some time.
Anyway, have fun in game and don't hesitate to ask if you have any questons or need help with anything. :)
Fly safe, captain!
I played both Freespace and Freespace 2, both were light years ahead of their time, with the current mods its even better. I still play Freespace 2, with or without mods its imo simply a must have game (I think I bought it 2 or 3 times, mainly cause lost my physical copy, still have original box though, just not with the original discs in).
What always had me in awe in FS2 were the scale of some of the major battles, me flying my flimsy little fighter or bomber between huge star destroyers(really the scale compared to what you fly is insane, you will feel small flying up the side of some of the ships in that game), beam weapons firing left and right and if I got in the way of them, be it friendly or enemy beam, tough luck...could also be used to my own advantage if I managed to make an enemy fighter get hit by the beams...
I have so many fond memories created by that game ;-)
And yet, at least once a week I come back and spend an hour or two having an absolute blast with SPG2. LGM, what have you done to me? You have destroyed my perfect elitist strategy snobbery record. I may never forgive you... :D
Freespace 2 is still my No.1 game of all time. Amazing atmosphere, awesome combat, extremely tense battles and a really cool story. I wish space-games like that were still being made, these "open-space" games like SPG2 or the X-series are fun and all but they can't compare to games like Freespace in terms of atmosphere and a feeling of urgency and impending disaster... Just being able to put off your (extremely urgent, critical) main mission to get some random credits or hunt down a random pirate is imo really immersion-breaking while in Freespace you always have the feeling that if you don't succede in your mission or do the best job you possibly can the whole war will be lost meanwhile you are still just a fighter/bomber-pilot who has to be on top of his game around those huge battleships.
Also: DIVE, DIVE, DIVE! (best, most memorable moment I have ever experienced in a game :D )
