Starpoint Gemini 2 is based on tactical combat and managing a capital ships (star trek style) combined with rpg elements (skills, perks, officers). Entire tactical philosophy is set to utilize multiple turrets placements and appropriate usage of them as well as usage of different shields. Fighters exist but as special ability from appropriate carrier class vessels. There are 70 different ships in various classes to choose from, and sandbox game spans through large single streamed map. Beside combat, players can explore different space territories (state controlled or rogue), anchor on stations and planets, manage reputation with dozens of factions etc...
This is the short description - there are also mining and trading but that is not done as in depth as in X series games. Basically, very detailed economy system is main difference between SPG2 and X, which definitely puts far greater accent to it. Oh, and another distinction is that X is a fully finished game and we're still in development.
I hope this can help you to determine if our game is something that might be correct for you. Most members of our team enjoy and play both, to be honest.

Why should you buy it? First of all, it's not a totally bugged disaster like Rebirth with a horrible, crappy performance and stability, with features that wasn't exactly as they told us. It doesn't give you the option to walk around in a space station, or to build up your big trading empire with your own factories and stuff.
You can do freelance missions which involves smuggling, hunting pilots, repairing space stations, scanning anomalies and so on. Story isn't implemented yet, but if I'm correct they recently said that they will start adding that to the game from now on. Obviously it's a big thing since story can make or break a game but we have to wait and see it first. You have lots of ships to buy, board and capture, shoot or team up with. Fighters aren't flyable though. This game focuses on bigger ships like frigates, cruisers or destroyers with multiple turrets (meaning no cockpit view, however they are going to implement a first person view). You can hire officers which will give you different bonuses for different things, like stronger railguns with bigger range, less energy consumption for your light weapons, faster speed and power-to-engines(your main ability to travel around) charge time. There are blackholes that suck you in and throw you somewhere far away, T-gates that you can use to travel around for a fee or just use PTE to fly from one corner of a HUGE map to another. The combat is a lot of fun, the graphics are gorgeous, there will be different classes to choose from, however as of now there is only one (a total of 3 will be in the game I think, but there might be more implemented later). Also an important thing to mention is, while in X games a lot of huge battles and stuff can happen while you are far away from it, in SG2 most of the stuff happens when you're there in close vicinity, so you won't see faction A capturing a far away sector from faction B while you're chilling in a space station. Oh, capturing sactors...you can't do that in SG2 sadly, but a lot of us would like to have that in the game. Obviously it wouldn't really work with the current settings(stuff happens when you're nearby). They would have to remake certaing aspects of the game for that, which won't happen in the near future, or at all.
You can also customize your ship, like adding different logos or pictures or whatever they are called, naming it or changing its colors.
tl;dr, you could say that compared to X, SG2 is a bit smaller, less complex arcade-ish RPG game. It has skills, levels, classes, crafting(not yet implemented), a big sandbox world, lots of ships to choose from and lots of side missions. You can mine, trade, salvage, or battle your way to having millions of credits.
I can't really think of anything else right now. I just woke up and I didn't get my cup of coffee yet. Curse you nightshifts! Anyway this should give you an idea of what kind of game SG2 is.
My recommendation?
FAKIN' BUY IT!
But if you want to compare this game to the X-series games...well, it's not really anything like those. :)
To me the best way to sum Starpoint Gemini 2 up is like...Elite with a dash of Starfleet Command's more "naval" style tactical combat plus the aforementioned RPG elements.
X-series becomes a star fleet/space trading/empire simulation, at least in the later stages.
Ultimately not very like Starpoint Gemini 2 other than...they're both set in space and you shoot lasers at people. :)
Elite (and derivative games) is a much closer comparison, although this game is by no means a "clone" as it definitely has its own unique feel and is shaping up to be the space sim I've been looking for ever since I got bored with X-series!
ok, i'm more a empire builder then an action player, but if you focus your effort on tactical and do a good job, down the road, once the game is fully develope i ll probably grab it and play some.
As for X franchise, if you take a look how x3 develope, there will probably gonna be major patch coming and an extension for stuff they wanted to put in but got short of time. I'm waiting for it to mature before buying, currently i'm still playing X2 (currently over 200 hour on my games, haven't got my first capital ship yet)
It probably isn't the correct place for suggestion, but if are to focus on tactical and crew and alike, maybe an interesting feature would be one similar like those boat or submarine games, where when you get hit stuff in your ship can break or are set in fire then you dispatch your repairement or firefigther, seal room...

On the other hand, I LOVED Jupiter: The Nexus Incident, and I enjoyed Star Trek Online for a while...I still have an account in that game, an admiral character and a few top-of-the-line ships, but the game mechanics were never that great to begin with.
What I'm looking for is a space game where you can have an awesome, huge ship, and be able to customize its looks as well as its capabilities. SPG2 looks promising on that front. I also want a space game where the galaxy really feels huge, like it's supposed to, but without boring me to tears when it comes to navigating it. In other words, it would be sweet to REALLY explore far-flung systems and really feel like I'm exploring a galaxy, instead of a themepark with a handful of systems to check out.
Given my interests, would you guys recommend this game? Cheers.
It all felt small, and there's no real point to exploring because there is no real "deep space" or far-flung locales...it's like a typical MMO where you cannot go off the beaten trail.
Instead of space, it feels like a series of small black boxes or fishtanks, and nothing about it feels organic the way space is supposed to.
How does SPG2 compare?
X- Rebirth suffered from 2 major problems - Too ambitious and poor optimisation even for high end systems. This may change in the long term but I wouldn't hold your breath.
SPG 2? Fun and developers who do actually engage their players and are very open to suggestions. (space pony pending. I'm watching you, Oliver)
It was released totally incomplete yet was supposed to be finished (wasn't an early-access game). Assets essential for the campaign hadn't even been added, the NPC graphics were worse than some 1998 titles. Egosoft released a string of patches to try to fix some of the more broken elements but it remains a horrible game. The mini-games like search-the-boxes and the space-race lanes are ridiculous. Every space station used the one same small map with same content in same locations. The only thing the game has got going for it are the beautiful space vistas and exteriors of space stations (they are incredible). Everything else about it (ship interiors, NPCs, your own vessel, the awful GUI) are downright horrible and it breaks all the immersion the game could have had. With much relief, I finally got my money back from Steam, but others weren't so lucky.
