If there is an escort mission and the eescorts fly faster than you (in PTE) something is wrong with your game.

Titans are supposed to be the best ships in game, and they are, but it would be unrealistic if you can obtain them too easy. Fighting them requires tactics and patience. And yes, it's not easy, I know, but you'll get there eventually.
Since Titans was the last DLC for SPG2, most people were already on max level and with much experience in the game so they didn't had any problems, but I understand how new ayers might find it a bit too challenging. It's not easy, I agree.
Some stuff that was annoying is already changed in Warlords with plenty more to come. Two biggest annoyances, based on player's feedback were stutters while crossing sectors and inability to skip cutscenes, and that is already addressed in Warlords.
Blueprints were also too grindy with too low drop chance. Picking missions in the middle of space was unrealistoc ao in Warlords you get missions on every station which is much more realistic. Stuff like that.
We will make officers much deeper, not just plain bonuses on paper.
Scale was a bit off in SPG2, in SPGW everything is much bigger, that was also requested by the players. All in all, we have a fantastic and friendly community always eager to help and that is also important. :)
So yes, that's planned.
It offers a different experience, more in-depth economy but slower pace and progression. Both games have their pros and cons and I respect Egosoft for all the good and inspiring games they have done. :)
