Note however than missions are good for exp aad reputation, but not for money. Do other things for income.
I took another suggested route of adding more credits to my save game as I was way over level but undergeared for how far I'd progressed in the story and even freelance missions were deadly to me.
If I could change one thing about the game it would be xp that was the grind and not the cash
I just boarded this ship during a mission, check the sell amount

Remember that xp will push your level forward and increase npc difficulty. It really is that punishing if your bank balance doesn't match the cost of required ship needed to do the missions that your being offered.
You have to take time out to just concentrate on building up your cash reserves or get punished and ship boarding and selling is the way to go. Pick a ship that holds as many troopers as possible and officers that boost ship boarding skills
