Also P2P games like Warframe/etc... a lot depends on the host's connection.
I'd rather it be client/server and have lots of servers across the globe or one central server + multiple regional gateways (like EVE's)

You should post on TE's official forums, the game is still early access/beta after all.
Same thing was with online characters in DD: Eternity, so I'm not sure they'll change anything. Maybe if the game will be VERY popular, maybe then devs make more servers. Devs of Path of Exile did for example.
P.S. Good anti-cheat system solves 99% of cheaters\hackers problem in p2p system. And characters and items may be store in Trendy servers, this would solve piracy problem. Always there is a solution but many devs don't give a f**k about it.
