"Actually, purchasing the bundles gives you a very big dollar value in both currency and rewards. They'll only be available for a little while longer, so you were able to secure that value before we retire those packages (announcement is coming soon on timeline for retiring them).
Depending on which package you bought, you get some exclusive content that will ONLY be available during Early Access through those package purchases (Skins, accessories, title, etc), plus you still get a discount on a pretty good amount of currency that can be used to purchase things like inventory expansion and in-game cosmetics.
We never monetize power or advantage (no pay-2-win), so the currency is used for convenience or vanity, but the value you get for supporting the game early is, we think, pretty good.
Thank you, by the way, for being involved in those early stages. Hopefully this info provides some feedback on the purchase value. We did do our best to put that the game is going F2P in as many places as we could think on our Steam store, including the Early Access description, the game summary, in the FAQ, and in many many comments and dev streams. We'll certain take into account that some people, despite all the messaging, may have still missed it, and see if we can find even better ways to communicate important details like this in the future. I don't consider it your fault that you missed the messaging, but our opportunity to try and do things better in the future!"
Edit: On topic, I'm fairly certain that DD2 was always planned to be F2P in the end, just like H1Z1 will eventually be too. Buying it early supports the devs and gives you stuff in the process.
I'd definitely pay for dyes. Personally not a fan of the costumes that have been released so far, but dyes would be fantastic.
