How do i activate codes?

Go to the mailbox in your tavern, there is a segment to enter codes near the bottom of the menu.

Also unless they have changed things (it's been a while since I've had a code to enter) things won't automatically apply to your account. You will recieve a mail note that you have to claim once it arrives. Which should be nearly instantly.
