but it really depents what chaos lvl your playing and what enemies you will encounter but the apprentice I hardly ever use maybe only sometimes for the freeze tower
PDT.
So ledges and such are usually helpful, corners etc.
Also, apprentice barriers are slightly thinner than the spike blockade which could let you place your towers to get more range out of them.
this video from MrJuicebags might help you abit as he does explain the different towers from the starter heros.
How to Beat Chaos 1 for Your First Time in DD2

Right now, you're bunching up all your offenses in the same spot and hoping that their combined DPS will finish off the enemy mobs before they drop your wall.
It might be better if you start placing some of the flamethrowers along the enemy path. This makes each tower more efficient than placing all of them at chokepoints.
They have almost ZERO aggro compared to when you last played. Back 'then', offensive towers generate so much aggro that you had to protect them a la DD1. Currently as long as the towers aren't physically blocking the path and there is a wall or some other distraction, the mobs will ignore your offensive towers.
Thus for C1 [specials: Vanguard aka shield bearers], you can place something like a Ramster or a Poison Defence Tower on either side of the spawn exits, point them at your own wall. You might need to experiment a bit [it's ALMOST zero aggro ^_^].
