Gear progression
Haven't played since sometime back in 2017... Read patch notes, and my highest hero is rated with a 1810 champion/gear score. Start doing some Chaos 3 and 4 for shards im missing (Pretty much where I left off), and every single piece of gear was around 1k - 1.2k gearscore... Nowhere near my current highest in the deck... Same low score drops for 5 games straight, and can't seem to progress with current gear, but I can't get improvements so I can actually progress in chaos tiers either? Like... What the hell?

It seems to take a couple of matches before you "catch up" to your gear, when you first start playing with the update. Just do a few maps? :D

Did 5 maps in a row, same, same and same low drops.

And that's really my problem here. With current gear I can't solo the higher chaos tiers (I refuse to get carried).. But what I can solo right now doesn't allow me to progress gearwise, so I'm getting pretty frustrated. Any solid advice on this would be appreciated.

Even finishing a wave or 2 on higher chaos tiers could help bump you up as you get loot every wave you finish, thats how alot of people have to progress if it comes to it.
Since every Chaos tier has a hard cap on item score you wont be able to progress within said tier if you have already hit the gear cap for that chaos tier, which by the sounds of it, you have

Will give failing a try and see if I get lucky with a few drops on early waves. Not exactly great game design or intuitive tbh, but thanks for the advice. Hope it works.
dont know exactly which chaos tier is suited for your gs, but i'd recommend playing onslaught anyway because you get minimal upgrades every round once you catched up & rarely cosmetic items

K, so Onslaught recommended for gearing up more fluidly? Will give that a try instead. Thanks

i still don't understand the balancing decisions made in this game. "in order to get better gear you have to intentionally take a challenge you can't complete due to your low gear in the hopes you get drip fed better gear by failing"

there has to have been a better way to balance than going against the the instincts of a player to intentionally kill yourself over and over. did onslaught ever fix this strange progression? i'd love to play the game again, but being able to AFK chaos 1 and failing chaos 2 on the second wave is just demoralizing.

You don't have to not complete the challenge ^_^. One can skip the grind a bit by upgrading the gear. Most players don't since you might just throw the gear away later on but a full upgrade makes a significant difference. Certain shards make an even bigger splash... especially the ones from higher tiers [which you can't solo... catch-22].

Or do Onslaught. It's probably easier for more players since the jump in difficulty is more "spread out"?

Check your shards too and try some Mastery as well [some of the shards are nice to have]. As a guide to loot drops, I still use their gold value more than gearscore because gearscore gives equal weight to all stats.

In DD2 though, +critical damage is a bigger factor for most defences.

Gear Sale Value Tier Relics Weapon Shield Helmet Chest Gloves Boots 0 98 155 157 82 137 63 71 1 157 245 245 128 215 98 113 2 237 372 372 192 328 146 169 3 315 498 498 254 437 193 224 4 451 716 716 363 628 275 319 5 685 1089 1089 550 954 415 482 6 1003 1599 1599 805 1400 606 705 7 1338 2135 2135 1073 1870 807 940

When the gold value of your loot drops are near or at the max for that tier, it's time to move on.

Thanks... What happens to sale values later on after tier/chaos 7? Does it continue to scale on higher floors in Onslaught?

And 2) What/where are those impactful shards that one can't get solo?

At 1800 gear score you should be doing Chaos 5 (or 4 at least).

To be honest I like this progress since each new tier is actually a challenge instead of just "takes slightly longer time to finish". Too many games loses my interrest because it feels like I'm being served rather than being forced to do better.

Its like diablo, youre able to do torment 1,2,3,4, then out of nowhere you can jump and do t12 after a bit and it just relies on sets rather than actual stats or strategy. This has a bit more challenge, i personally feel diablo has more options for endgame content, though both feel kind of bleh once you hit said endgame

After Chaos 7 or Floor 65 the gear will not improve and keep droping in the score range of 5.1xx upto around 5.7xx (if you are very lucky). The score also favours the main attrivute so you have to compare the gear and values because the primary stat is not always the one hat is the most important for you.
