How to equip Shards?

So after sorting inventory and reequiping some heroes i wanted to add some of the shards i got but if i pull them over the gear there supposed to fit into it says "invalid gear slot", if i right click any shard it says "not equippable"
how can i use the shards??

ye, you need to middle mouse click a gear piece and then you have an option to upgrade that piece and to add shards to that piece
