Question about Golden Armor Set 4 set bonus

For the 4th set bonus, it mention "Upon Critical Hits and defeats, grants a small amount of Qi."

So does it means just getting critical hits won't gain additional Qi? Must both critical hit AND kill a mob/boss than gain additional Qi?

I think it's either of them, not both at the same time.
