I am just glad that DLC did not win it, that would really send the wrong message.
I've played through all of Astrobot and the dlc. It's an 8/10 game at BEST. Graphically it's nice (otherwise I'd say it's a 7/10), but gameplay-wise it's one of the most standard platformers out there. It's extremely short overall, small levels, mostly just jumping while rarely using the power-ups (most of which are boring), and it's tremendously easy. In no reality whatsoever should it have even been nominated. I'm absolutely floored by how people reacted to it, saying that in 30+ years of gaming this is the best game they've ever played, how they literally cried tears of joy from how good it is, etc. It's absolutely insane. It's a "good" game. That's it. Just "good". Much of the hype revolves around the nostalgia of the game, which basically made the game a giant Playstation advertisement.
The fact that Black Myth and Silent Hill 2 weren't even nominated is crazy. But I think they messed up with the Elden Ring DLC nod because they assumed that since it was so well received when it came out, viewers would love that it was nominated for GotY. But there was immense backlash and they knew about it after, hence the Statler and Waldorf joke. They pay attention to online chatter because it's all about appeasing the maximum amount of viewers and they knew they screwed up and wasted a slot.
Astrobot didn't win because it's the best game this year, it won because that was the most financially viable pick to retain the Sony fanbase for next year, the year after that, etc. It's 100% an economically based choice.
That's my thinking too.
FR!
The only award that matters in that joke of a show is "Player's Voice". UNANIMOUS DECISION by 100% vote, Black Myth: Wukong. It's already GotY in all but name, because the award was bought and paid for by Sony. Utter garbage.
True.
It doesn't make much sense at all.
It's the most voted game by the players, but then doesn't win GOTY.
If not Wukong, with SOLID gameplay and excellent mechanics, Metaphor should have won. But Astro Slop did NOT deserve GotY. It just proves that TGA are rigged to hell and back. You can purchase the win if you're one of the sponsors for the show or if you buy it from Uncle Geoff directly. Corrupt to the max.
