Success of Wukong
No idea how this game got so much praise and stuff. It is a good game but my god it has so many flaws.
- Invis walls all over place
- half-butt crafting
- every mob plays the same
- bosses are dodge and hit, with varying flavor attacks
exploring and fighting is boring to be honest

This is not a rant or troll or so. I am just wondering - with so many games in this genre that are just better. How did it so well? Chinese myth und Sun Wukong hit a sweet spot?

I think it's because there was a drought of these kind of games.

So anything like it was a positive.

invisible walls, sure but half butt crafting? mate, you want an alchemy table and boil potions for hours until they are to correct recipe? and bosses are indeed dodge and run if you dont know how to use your see through abilities and only use 1 stance. granted some attacks are cannot be seen through, but the majority can.
game feels old school in a good way - and many players like that. Even from 20+ milion playerbase, 5+ milion is outside of China so believe it or not, this game would be successful even without China. Invisible walls are there and I cannot deny that, but lets be honest, is this so MAJOR issue to it? look at other games with much worse issues in design, than invisible walls. Also, many chapters have different enemies and I think only chapter 5 reused many assets, while chapter 6 again have new enemies, so up to chapter 4 you barely can see enemies reused at all (like, few skeleton snakes from chapter 1, but lets be honest, this is the only reused enemy i remember). Now, game is well optimized if you don't go beyond high settings, looks very good, art style is top level, combat is something new, as we have God of War (2018 and Ragnarok) mixed with Dark souls playstyle which works good, many i mean MANY lore, besides the book you have story for each individual enemy you fight with (so like 100+ stories to read if you like it) and within main story, you can feel very powerful while last fight is an ABSOLUTE CINEMA.
This game is 8/10 at least. Surely, not 10/10, no game is, but Wukong is a new approach with some old-style games too, but it deserved success and thank god it did, because that means we will see more of awesome Chinese mythology in the future - topic that was not used in gaming or media on the west. So yeah, Game Science's Journey to the west is successful trip.

haven't seen invis walls any worse. This is getting ridiculous. Exploring and trying things out is choked to death because of this.
god it's all so mediocre and meh?! I don't get it

Maybe because most players just don't share the same feelings and thoughts with you; maybe they don't find the "flaws" you mentioned irritating them that much like you feel; maybe they think these flaws are not crucial enough to overshadow the pros and virtues of this game, while the pros of this game are much greater than the flaws; maybe they don't even think these flaws are "flaws" like you do, they might think "no, exploring and fighting is not boring at all, "no, every mob doesn't play the same", and "bosses are dodge and hit with varying flavor attacks" is basically similar to every other soul-like game and action game,....etc. Maybe the purpose of you play this game is just to find its "flaws", magnify them, complain them and used them to trash on this game, unlike other players.

Most of all, I find you claim you have "no idea why this game got so much praise" is hard to believe, because there are already over 1 million reviews on Steam and over 70+ thousands are English for you to read, not to mention countless game footage and summary videos all over the internet, if you really want to know why people praise this game, you can just directly read what people praise about this game, AKA their "reviews", very easy to do, but NOPE, you don't care, you don't read, instead, you just directly jump into the forum to complain, to question, to doubt, to discredit people's positive receptions of this game, just because you dislike it, so sounds more like you're here to provoke people and trashtalk this game, like another typical troll, unlike what you claimed.

This game is already sold 28 million copies worldwide, over 8 million are from foreign players, and it still remains very positive receptions from both Chinese and foreign players, plus with a bunch of foreign game awards, in other words, vast majority like the game unlike you, so if you dislike the game, that's your own issue, not our issue, not the game's issue. Doesn't matter how hard you try to deny and reject, that's the simple fact.

By saying mobs are the same.
I don't think you are judging objectively.
The potion crafting & etc you mentioned in the game was the best in its kind.

Since you've played chapter 1 & 2. I don't think Invis walls that IGN BSing about should be such big problem..
In chapter 3 yeah it had lots of walls to prevent you from falling but it has certain patterns that invs walls only exists when there is no terra to jump on.

BTW DMC & Bayonetta and even Resident evil had much more invs walls and no body was complaining about it.
Sekiro was kinna free to climb like Tenchuu but it doesn't have such have such variety of landscapes views & context.
The game was old school and was unique in a good way with best art design so far.
Play and feel the game yourself and Stay away from the haters coz they tend to exaggerate

The culture, the background, the details and the discussion into humanity. In short, it's the depth you are missing out - not that you'd care anyway

Wukong had a BIG overhype initially and ended up with worse player numbers after it.

ffs, even Skyrim has more active player already again. Speaks for itself.
And its weird, because it has more reviews than every other AAA game (bg3, elden ring etc) but less active players even if its newer.

Not a GOTY. Just an average game with questionable success.

Don't blame yourself, just not your game, maybe.
