when do you get a new staff?

i feel like i've faced 4 bosses at this point and i'm still walking around with this weak ass 2 by 4. why am i 2-3 hours into the game and i haven't been able to upgrade my staff. did i miss a part or something? i'm currently tryna get past this serpent dude who's 2 stages. Also you get to only buy 3 potions before they're sold out? tf is that about.

Your first new staff is after you beat the snake boss. Which is shortly after you beat the wolf.

Once you kill serpent guy, that unlocks crafting a new staff
