Is it Advisable to read Chinese Mythology for this?
As the title says, because reading those might spoil it or should I let the game unravel it self and have the surprise of my life? Of course, if someone has a bit of knowledge on a topic, twists would surely result to a surprise. So there is pros and cons, so yeah, which do you think would be a biggest treat?

When I played God of War, I dont know much about Greek Mythology, just a names here and there, and it was a great game!

not needed but you could read up on the lore

most of the game is just killing demons and stuff that get in your way

There is no doubt that if you understand the basic storyline of Journey to the West, it will help you understand the game's plot. But on the other hand the plot of Black Myth Wukong is obviously rather different or adapted from the original, so my advice would be to just read the general introduction. Also, have fun with the game!:winter2019happyyul:

There are two full translations of Journey to the West, one is The Journey to the West, translated by Prof. Anthony C Yu, a Chinese-American scholar at the University of Chicago, and the other is Journey to the West, translated by Prof. W J F Jenner, a professor at the University of Leeds, UK.
I would recommend Prof. Yu's translation. The main problems with Jenner's version arise in three places: first, although Jenner does not remove all references to traditional Chinese culture, as his compatriot Willy does, he does make a number of unnecessary and unsavory adaptations. Secondly, Jenner himself seems to have little knowledge of the theories of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism, and makes too many slip-ups in his understanding of the original text.
Finally, Jannar is clearly not a good poet, and almost all of the poems in the original book are reduced to unrhymed jingles.

(I used an AI translator, sorry for any inaccuracies!)

There is an old saying in China that goes, 'By reviewing the old, one can learn the new.' Play first, complete the game once, and then read it. This way, you can gain new surprises in the subsequent gameplay.

The best one is to read up Anthony C. Yu's translation of the source material ''Journey to the West". it comes in 4 volumes, since it is a massive source material and longer because translations needed to make the translation clear.

don't read others because lots of them cut down the content such as poems and other content for brevity and relevance. It would probably give some back story and context clues for things you encounter in game.

Yes, and not only Journey to the West but also many other works, you will broaden your horizons

Watch Overly Sarcastic Productions' youtube videos on Journey to the West, they are quick and easy, and you get to know the characters and the story. It'll help with the game for sure.

some aspects of it is in it. other aspects changed.

Journey into the west is a Buddhsit based Chinese Mythology, as a Buddhsit I enjoy it. Dharma lessons are in it. Wukongs Journey where his ego fills him, hatred, anger, desire of power....

Until the Buddha drops a mountain on him and he spends a long time reflecting basically on the 8 fold path and himself.

Then he become awakened (woke) and transforms to a more hero like figure.

Note there are multi forms of him. Including a shell shadowed form that is the false one.

the full story is a bit longer and more complex. Is hard to summarize but for Buddhists its understood easily, others may need to cross reference.

There are good English full sets, i don't recommend summery versions as the full true translation versus include it anyway.

Pre-read basic comments of universal Buddha Dharma, it actually will help you understand the story so much more easily. The writing is in a period of china at a high education period. We had to read it in college.

The game does stray from it, while having some aspects of it. So don't expect it to be the same.

I imagine the experience will be similar to Nioh 1 and 2 in regards to history / storytelling. I expect it will be quite similar to the real story but with alterations that fit the game.
