Could be as simple as being done for gameplay reasons. There are a lot of particle effects, right? I could imagine gold doesn't quite stand out as much compared to dark brown / black when all of that stuff is happening around you. That said...

A color swap mod might be a nice thing to have after playing for a while, so keep me updated if you are able to get it done.
