Is there any way to get this stuff/farm it?

I am a bit afraid of cultivating spirits since it seems like it's just a drop

by the time you finish playthrough you will have more that enough you can also buy them from shrines.. you dont need to max out a spirit btw for the passive effects, its enough to get almost maxed out, leaving one or 2 slots empty

You will have enough to upgrade 3, potential 4, spirits by the end of the game and that does not include Toad as it uses different resource to upgrade. You can not farm this resource so it is considered finite but it is rather plentiful.
