2) Just NG+. Game is way easier.
Some tips & tricks:
1. Use the fan vessel - this one is very good, it will completely strip him of his shield and can even disrupt some of his more dangerous attacks.
2. Timing of the vessel - it is important to use it when Erlang is far away from his HP thresholds. He will go immune and does a big aerial attack sequence every 25% of his health, or similar, that will ignore the tornado.
3. If you like the fan, you can use drink in your gourd that gives you Qi on use to be able to use it multiple times during fight.
4. Azure Dust transformation is also good here as he does not attack you and you can break 3/4 of his shield in one transformation if you hit him a lot. Try to push him to a arena edge and then use the transformation, this will mean he does not teleport away.
5. Charged heavy attack and light combo finishers damage his health on top of damaging his shield. This is important but be aware that you can push him to his HP threshold and trigger his aerial attack.
6. You want as much mana as possible to be able to use Cloud Step as often as possible. Use it to avoid his big aerial attacks. Try to hit him with charging heavy attack (you need to put points in the skill to be able to do that) but he often side-steps the hit. It is mostly used as a safety measure.
7. You can use Cloud Step to heal and buff up with medicines before attacking.
8. Boost your lightning/thunder resistance. Lot of his attacks deal lightning damage and you do not want to deal with the de-buff too often.
9. You will need to use consumables, damage reduction medicine, life-saving pill for 1-time full heal and shock removal one. You will spend a lot of them so be careful and only use them when you are comfortable with the fight. I probably used 50 common medicines and around 10 of the one-time heals. I did not bother to use other pills but there are other options such as cooldown reset, etc.
10. Last 25% of his HP is fight for survival. Once he hits his last HP threshold, use Cloud Step wait for him to finish his attack sequence and be ready to go to town on him. Be aware that he will see you in Cloud Step in last phase. Cloud Step will trigger but he will still be able to attack you at this point.
11. Save enough mana to use Pluck of Many at the end. Your clones distract him and deal some direct damage to his health. Try to charge heavy attack while the clones keep him busy to finish him.
Good luck, the fight is annoying and difficult but the following sequence and ending is worth the hassle.
Don't rely on spells, or at least don't rely on spells much, many players find spellbinder are perfect for this fight; if you practice with him enough amount of time to start "fell" this fight or pattern of his attacks then rock solid spell is your best friend here
