Does maitreya´s orb even work?

used it vs a couple of bosses and never seemed to get the effect. As i understand it you have to hit the same enemy several times then it will let you avoid death once, but i never got it to trigger.

When I was testing it, it took 2 whole stamina bars of staff spin to activate it
