Qestion about storyline.
This is simply a question, no judgement is either intended or implied.

Is there a plotline or narrative to the game? I mean, beyond the lore revealed by the journal entries, or the thinnest of "defeat all the enemies to free the world" or whatever. I mean a meaningful, respectably involved storyline to follow and engage with.

If not, if it's really all arcade-style combat and action, that's fine, I can get behind that. But I'm in the bamboo grove now (Snake Trail shrine, which I think is something like 4 checkpoints into chapter 1, so pretty far) and I keep waiting for a narrative to drop. If there is none, I can just relax and enjoy the game for what it is without anticipating that.

Just curious.

The narrative is what the old monkley says at the beginning, gather the 6 relics of the original Sun Wukong (the one from the intro) to revive (=become) him.

Okay, so "defeat all enemies and save the world." That's cool. I'll stop expecting anything deeper.

There is more to the story than just that, but many references are difficult to understand if you don't know the book the game is based on.

To a certain degree you're playing in medias res because the story is a continuation from the events of Journey to the west. The narrative is partly in the journals and partly hinted by the npcs. Each chapter ends with an overview of the story from Journey to the west to help it make sense but without context from the Journals it's a little tricky to piece together.
As an example since you're in Chapter 1 snake trail, you know that the temple where Ling Xuzi the new boss wolf was located once burned down and was rebuilt. This is something the Keeper said at the beginning of the game. Reading through the journals we learn that Guangzhi was once a normal wolf spirit who wanted to be human so he took human form and tried to fit in with humans but they threw rocks at him. He asked the other spirits why humans wouldn't accept him and they told him he needed to learn to act like a human. So his master the old, Ling Xuzi sent him to Elder Jinchi an abbot at the temple to learn. Reading GuangMo's journal entry we learn that the snake spirit thought that Ling Xuzi sending Guangzhi to Elder Jinchi was meant to influence the Bear spirit (Who this is isn't explained yet until you progress later so I won't spoil it). So the snake spirit sent GuangMo to try to get close to Elder Jinchi. GuangMo didn't have much luck as GuangZhi was clearly the favorite. This went on until two wandering monks came with the Kasaya of Eversparks (what this is isn't explained but figure treasure). Elder Jinchi wanted the Kasaya badly that he planned to kill the monks. GuangMo suggested they use fire as an accidental cause of death. The two monks however were Tang and Sun Wukong. So instead getting killed in the fire they escaped and the temple burned down. So now you've come here because you've learned that one of the relics was rumored to be here. Who rebuilt the temple? What happened to Elder Jinchi? Where is the relic? More things to learn.
Once you finish the chapter they'll have a video recap of the events to try to wrap up the story in a cohesive fashion that makes more sense if you've read the journal entries.
The rest of the game is essentially revisiting the places of interest from Journey to the west as possible locations of the remaining relics. As you go to each section you'll find the aftermath of the previous journey.

I'm reading each new journal entry, but I had no idea they tied into each other to form a cohesive narrative. I look forward to the recaps at the end of each chapter. But it's hardly an in-game narrative, honestly.

Still, as I said, the game has stunning graphics and is fun to play, so we don't have to look any further than that to justify playing it.

Even Sun Wukong wasn't trying to "save the world". He wanted to be the most powerful and be taken seriously by the other gods. Not your typical story by any means.

Whatev. It's not worth justifying. In the end, it's just an arcade-style martial arts game. And that's fine, that's all it needs to be.

The narrative gets a little better in Chapter 2 because of the headless bard. He's going to be popping up as you go through the chapter giving you hints and backstory. I'm playing the game slowly so I don't have the whole picture yet. How much of it is made up for the game and how much is from the book I'm not sure yet but it's not a bad read but yeah if you're enjoying the beat em up aspect then that's all it needs to be. I read the journals to get a sense of what to expect coming up ahead and I enjoy being exposed to the folklore.

It's funny that you're posting this on a forum that you have to read when it's very very clear that you haven't read a single bestiary entry or paid any kind of attention to the in game dialog, this is a literal continuation of JttW and literally answers "well what happened after?"

The myth/lore TL;DR is basically: upon Sun Wukong's defeat he split in 6 parts. In the game you're the "Destined One" who is on a journey to recover the parts of Sun Wukong. Depending on how well you know the original Journey to the West, you'll recognise some eastereggs/callbacks.

The game itself is a somewhat original story in the sense that it plays out after the original story's timeline. You know, since Sun Wukong has been defeated. There have been some artistical liberties as well, because the opening cutscene shows Wukong still having his headband to restrain him. While in the original this doesn't exist anymore at that time, because after he achieved Buddhahood that restraint disappeared.

If you've played the game you'll notice you're gathering 5 relics. "But you said he split in 6"? Well, yes. The 6th part is/was Sun Wukong's mind. Now I'll let you do the math here, where/who that 6th is a part of. You're the Destined One, so you'll know right?

The game has a long and hidden plot, you need to unlock each secret areas in each chapter to get the the reason on why it splits to 6 relics and unlock the secret ending. And the 5 NPC leading to 5 secret areas are related too.
