Why did they butcher the ground shadows?
Ground shadows projected from trees etc. look bad on every setting.
It changes to an higher quality just a few feet in front of you.
In the small zodiac village temple it literally changes where you stand.

Or is there some setting I'm missing.

To illustrate, these are at the same graphics setting, just walking forward for 0.5 seconds. And they shift from blurred to sharp. Very distracting!

Blurred shadow.

Sharp shadow.

I think only in cinematic and rt settings the shadows would be perfect otherwise it reduces the quality of those quite a lot in very high and high settings reducing load to get better frames

I tried cinematic, it still looks bad.
No setting is changing this shadow lod, feels like a bug.

Look up the VSM MOD (Virtual Shadow Maps)
They are sharper, albiet a little too sharp on the edges, but overall still better quality than nonRT shadows.

It's a good alternative (and comes with additional performance cost), but they are very noisy/dithered around the edges, to the point it looks worse in a way, at least to me. Especially if you start combining that with upscalers

I noticed shadows look crappy at lower settings, but cinematic is alright i think. If you want better shadows use path tracing, though performance cost is not worth it in my opinion.
I killed last boss today and played entire game with cinematic preset, and it was fine in my opinion.

I think they lowered draw distance etc to help with performance that's why things in distance sometimes look lower quality, considering this game's performance requirements it was good call in my opinion, i've got 4080 and was forced to use dlss balanced for 4k/cinematic as it is lol.

Exactly, NV RT is very cool, but only realistic if you want to play with both DLSS + FG and have 4090 (at least at 4K). But Cinematic preset is where it's at and definitely worth it. I play with the exact same settings as you, what were your FPS in average? I have around 45-60 depending on the area and fights (but with 3080 Ti).

It depends on location but 4K/Cinematic/DLSS Quality i got 55-65fps, with DLSS Balanaced i'm above 60fps 100% of the time and then i slapped FG on top and i'm getting 95fps on avg. after 3h playtime when i checked it at beginning. I played whole game like that (killed last boss today) and it worked very well had no issues with anything really. Very nice game, gonna go achievment hunting on the weekend ;)

I'm sure there were some visual artefacts if you squint but i play on 65 OLED and sitting few meters away from a TV so it's not like i see any of that ;)

Nice, that's about what I expected from the 4080 +-35-40 % perf. uplift, I see it holds there as well. I'm playing on an OLED as well, albeit bit closer, since it's 42" one. As you said, it's a very nice game, so I don't mind the upscaling in this case. Good luck with the achievement hunting, cheers!

I would guess it was part of the optimization process.
Dr. Frasier Crane Aug 30, 2024 @ 11:03pm
I believe some of you are misunderstanding the issue :).
Those images are at the same graphics setting, just walking forward for 0.5 seconds.

This means when you walk aroud the world you constantly see this shift in front of you, changing the shadows from low to high resolution.
No graphics setting changed this.

So I'm guessing all of you have the same 'problem'?
HUX Aug 30, 2024 @ 11:08pm
It's the shadow cascade.
You can improve this by editing the engine.ini

1. Find Engine.ini at %userprofile%\AppData\Local\b1\Saved\Config\Windows

2. Edit it using Notepad

3. Add these lines and save the file:

[SystemSettings]
r.ShadowQuality=3
r.Shadow.DistanceScale=2
