There were actually instances in the first two chapters where you could die by falling.
Tiger Acolyte hit me off the bridge. I seem to recall there was one or two other times it happened as well.
There are a couple parts in this game where added BS mechanics increase the playtime, not as bad as the souls series, but it really slows things down.
... you could always run to the very top applying what you have and kill the 1st boss that induces this state, then from the rest before "before wheel", something like "top pagoda" run opposite it and drop down to kill the second boss keeping some of the doors locked.
Pagoda realm was annoying a bit due to the fuzzy visuals when enraged (or whatever is that mechanic with red eyes) but rest was fine. You can always just wait it out in a safe spot and then use chest that heals you to 50% of your HP over time to get back some HP to safely progress.
