This way they can keep the update size to a minimum. During patching, it will create the updated file based on current + delta = new file, and then it will move the new file to the installation location and delete the old one. That's why you need twice as much free space for the game. Because the update only contains the changes to the files on a binary level. The other option would be to re-download the whole game, but I assume this is also not what you desire. On the consoles its the same procedure btw.

This is issue with Steam and how the data are packaged in Unreal engine. I had to download 1GB of data, which was done very fast but it then took several minutes to update the game files.

Any patch notes for the upcoming patch?

Edit: found them. Seems no performance or visual glitches fixes/optimizations mentioned. So probably nothing regarding that just yet. Priority seems to be on fixing language errors, crash errors and improving assets (that they probably couldn't get done before release).
